[RBW] Re: A Homer Hilsen, between 57 and 59: how to decide?

2017-12-31 Thread Scott McLain
FWIW
I am 5-11 and have a 59 AHH. I have a short torso and it fits great! I
would call the folks at Riv and ask them. That is the fun of buying from
them! You may want to consider a Sam since it has a sloped top tube.

Good Luck! Scott

2017-12-31 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi John. If you dislike minimal standover, my recommendation might not be
the best! Standover has never bothered me, for several reasons. In all my
many miles and years of road riding, neither I nor any of my riding
partners has ever smashed into the top tube. And if there was a situation
where that was likely, you are probably going to be out of control to some
extent--stomping hard up a hill, slipping on a pedal---and not able to
simply plant your feet firmly on the ground at shoulder distance; ipso
facto, moot point anywho. And on a 59cm with a 74cm seat height, you *will*
have
clearance with shoes of some kind, whether clipless or street, during
normal stops, without leaning the bike--which, don't forget, also has a 2
percent slope. Still, a bit more seat post and a higher longer stem on a 57
will be fine if that equals more comfortable for you, even psychologically.
The AHH is a beauty! Curious what the folks at Riv recommend for you.

Thanks everyone. And I didn’t know that Riv used C-to-Too numbers. That
actually makes a lot of things make more sense to me.

I’ve always been a little stand over averse, which doesn’t quite work for
someone who is mostly torso.

I’ll give the shop a call after the holiday.

I second that suggestion. I use the same seat height but I am probably an
inch shorter in height than you. I could theoretically go with either size,
depending. But for bars even, and, IMO, a more practical, enjoyable,
comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing (ie, no super gangly stem, fistful
and a bit of post) fit, I would definitely choose 59, especially given that
Rivs are measured center to top, and feature laid back seat tube angles and
some kind of tt slope. And the Riv chart puts you there, and with upper
body toward longish end compared to PBH, it's where you will be happiest.
Of course, on a purchase this big you will be talking to them and they will
give you a recommendation.

I'd go with the 59.

As Joe said it is all about TT length. Consider calling Riv and discussing
it with them.
