Thanks Joel. I did contact them. The rep I spoke with said they were at
the polishers and would not be available for at least 4 weeks. But you are
right, they look available on the website.

2021-06-12 Thread Jay LePree

Hi Joel S,

I don't think Velocity will stop production of rim brake compatible
rims. I am concerned about quick availablity, quick defined as less than 6
weeks of rim brake compatible rimes, particularly in the 650B size. I
think the lack of readily available rims is somewhat driven by the rise of
the disc brake. An informal survey of two local shops shows the majority
of bikes for sale had discs on them.

I have been waiting since April for a 650B Velocity Quill rim. My internet
search shows more availability of disc brake compatible rims.

[RBW] Re: Anyone going to stock pile 650B rims for non-disc brakes?

2021-06-12 Thread Garth
In regards to the hub situation. upfront I know nothing of the bike biz
and how things are made or acquired with retailers and vendors.

What about Velocity hubs?
The ATB is a cartridge bearing design with steel freehub body in black.
Could they do silver for Riv ?
The Economy ATB is cup/cone design in silver.
Has anyone @Riv ever tested either as to it's quality and suitability ?
They have spare freehub bodies for the ATB hub.

Velocity told me the ATB hubs were fairly quiet, like Shimano. I myself
find loud hubs(most designs) to be an insult to . all decency.

The ATB hubs are made by Formula, deal with them direct ?
The ATB version is the OV-91 and OV-32s.
https://www.formulahubs.com/product.php?t=41
The Economy rear looks like a OV-32. The front the road hub called RB-56.
https://www.formulahubs.com/product.php?t=2

I know Riv offered the Silver hubs made by KT briefly. I don't know the
whats and whys about it being no more. I would've bought one if it had a
steel FH body(that's just my preference), but they appear to only offer
aluminum ones.

Rims aren't an issue, fortunately (though certain models are delayed). Now
hubs, that's another question altogether!

I recently sorted my unused rims, which had been thrown on hooks in various
part of the garage, and was somewhat shocked to find how many 650b rims I
had waiting to be built into wheels: four Velo-Orange Diagonale, two
Velocity A23, two A23 OC, two Synergy, two Grand Bois Papillon. Plus about
the same number each of 26" and 700c rims. Shows what several decades of
buying rims here and there in anticipation leads to. I even found several
unused Mavic MA2 and Module 3 rims, which are probably worth a fair bit
these days - I notice people on fleabay asking several hundred dollars for
these if new.

[RBW] Re: Anyone going to stock pile 650B rims for non-disc brakes?

2021-06-10 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I'm usually not an alarmist, but I've been stockpiling parts since last
April. I hope to ride rim brakes and 8 speed friction until I can't ride
anymore, which I hope is 35-40 years from now. It was tough seeing all the
shimano and sunrace 8 speed cassettes with a 34t dry up or go for way too
much money. They are starting to show back up again slowly, but it spooked
me. I have accumulated a pretty nice larder of consumables (tires, tubes,
chains, brake pads, cables/housing, some rear hubs) in the last year. My
next big project is buying 10 or so Sun CR18 rims (700c, polished, 36
hole). I don't think 700c rims are going anywhere, but this particular rim
may disappear some day and I just like how cheap and good they are. If you
can afford to do so, I'd snatch up a couple extra 650b rims just to sleep
better at night. I don't mind having parts on hand, even if they will all
be available again next year, because I love bikes, bike parts, and I do
all my own mechanics for my wife's bikes and mine (5 Rivendell's between
us).
