Joe-

While Ortliebs are indeed great and waterproof, I'd disagree that you *have*
to go that route for 'hardcore rainy commute riding". Canvas still works
great and that's primarily what I use in these rainy Cascadian winters. If
the bartubes had a more significant flap, the water most likely wouldn't
get in. I have an Acorn handlebar bag that is similar to the bartube, but
has a big flap protecting the zipper. So far, no issues.

Yes, water *resistant* would be the applicable term here, as the closure system
on varying Sackvilles will effect how each repels water. For hardcore rainy
commute riding, you'd need something like the stuff Ortlieb makes for those
conditions.

[RBW] Re: Bartubes discontinued

2017-12-05 Thread Shawn Granton
Regarding the waterproofness of the Bartube:
While it is true that the canvas is waterproof, the zipper isn't. And while
there's a "lip" over the zipper, this lip disappears if you fill the tube
up well enough, inviting the rain to get into the zipper pretty easily.

I had the Brand V version for a year or so and rode it in rainy Portland.
The rain getting in through the zipper was the main reason I sold it.

Shawn

yeah velcro's not a problem. I have the old V-brand (holier than cow)

another one of these but I also am thinking that I really like the revival
of the banana bag so I might hold out for that when it lands

This was one the reasons I hesitated. The other being I'd wear out the
Velcro.

I was thinking of also getting the short leather straps, putting them thru
the bag loops and then on the saddle loops. In the end, I purchased a
Carradice roll bag in black to blend in with my black saddle and other
black bags in the rear. My front bag is a grey XS saddle sack (love it).

I bought a blue one and it looks amazing, the construction feels sturdy,
and it fits my entire work outfit, meaning some days it's all I need for my
commute to work. Lives between my hunqapillar and cheviot.

I have one & use it frequently,  my only complaint is the Velcro straps;
although quick & easy, sometimes I need to switch to a bike with no good

to the back of my B-17s, so it doesn't get used as much as I'd like and is

All Sackville bags are waterproof. You probably don't need a Bartube if you
already have a bag on a front rack, but I've used one with a ShopSack in a
basket. I like the convenience of the basic essentials being in a separate
small bag I can transfer easily to whichever bike I grab.

I have one of the old Baggins ones, brass & leather. These are super
useful if you travel & can't expect a rental bike to have any bags. If you
can find a Baggins, I can attest to them wearing forever & thriving on
neglect. I would expect the Brand V or whatever they are now to be
similarly rugged.
