[RBW] Re: Bike for 350# person?

2010-01-15 Thread Michael Gordon
There's a post on another cycling list, asking for bicycle
 recommendations for a 350lb person.

I believe Rivendell worked initially with Co-Motion, and the result
was the Mazama:

[RBW] Re: Bike for 350# person?

2010-01-15 Thread EricP
Actually, Scott was over 500 pounds. An incredible weight loss story.

Anyway, when getting back into cycling my weight was over 350. The
bike I chose was a basic Specialized Hardrock Disc. The wheels were
the weak point on that bike. Broke a number of spokes. Otherwise,
the frame and fork held my weight without a single complaint.

While custom bikes are certainly a fine choice, the modern aluminum
mountain bike really can handle a lot of weight. And the compact
frame makes things a lot easier to straddle. And trust me, I
straddled a lot trying to catch my breath after riding a few miles.
Wasn't pretty.

But that's my bias. Would rather see someone buy a less expensive
bike and upgrade later as size decreases and mobility increases. What
works now might not in the future.

Bob Brown made a very nice super strong custom for the LFOAB when he
weighed well over 400 pounds. (he weighs well under 200 pounds now and
lost 330 plus pounds via cycling and diet changes)   I would also
consider Bob for this if the comotion bike is no longer production and
custom is the way to go.
 Here is Scotts story in
 pictures:http://www.bicycling.com/bke/slide/home/1,8155,s1-1-81-0,00.html
and at least the fork on his bike that Bob made is under custom fork
 crown on this page:http://www.bobbrowncycles.com/custom.htm

Scotts (defunct) blog is here if you are not familiar with
 it:http://istanbultea.typepad.com/
Scroll back to the beginning for the full story.
I had the pleasure of hanging out with him and his family a few years
back in Minneapolis and riding around with him, he is a great guy.

But anyhow. The comotion is probably the best bet. I suspect their
customs would be cheaper than Bob's, but depends on what your goals
are.   I think almost any custom builder COULD do the job. But alot
were not super helpful to scott when he started his journey.

Bob Brown in St. Paul MN built a bike for a 500 lb rider, calling it
a tandem built for one. That rider, who's been profiled in the Riv
Reader, lost 325 pounds over a couple of years and is a happy cycler.

Bob does beautiful work.

[RBW] Re: Bike for 350# person?

2010-01-15 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I hate to say this here, but none of the Rivendells would be my first
choice.

A custom bike is ok if the buyer is mega-rich and doesn't mind waiting
a long time. Otherwise it's a lot of money to spend ($4000-5000+) and
a long time to wait, and if/when the person loses some weight
(assuming that's the goal), the custom features suited to a big person
may not be ideal for the skinny person.

I like Eric's idea of a cheapish overbuilt MTB, probably with a wheel
upgrade. Or, if $1500-2000 is feasible, a Surly Instigator built at a
qualified LBS. The Instigator (with Pugsley front fork/wheel) has been
my main ride recently, and it has a lot going for it as a bike for a
bigger person. It has a 1.5 down tube, gussets, big tire clearance, a
disc brake option, etc, etc...

I have put together a number of bikes for 350-450 lb riders, and I'd
be willing to talk with the person directly to answer questions, make
suggestions, etc.

[RBW] Re: Bike for 350# person?

2010-01-15 Thread LouisvillePatrick
I was 340 pounds when I rode my Bombadil, with 36f/40r hole wheels and
45mm touring Schwalbe Marathons, across the beautiful state of
Wisconsin, with 90 pounds of gear (front low-riders and a rear rack)
on a week long self-supported tour. I am not kidding when I tell you
the bike did not make a peep. Not even a little whimper. Rolled like
a magic carpet. Those who know Wisconsin, know it is quite hilly and
fairly challenging. It was spectacular in every way.

I searched far and wide for the right frameset for me and have not
regretted my decision for one second. A lot goes into making a bike
strong enough for a large rider...frameset, wheelset, tires, bottom
bracket choice, etc.

I know I made the right decision because I'm 275lbs now. :)

Cheers!
