2012-03-19 Thread RJM
I think the photo on the Riv site of the white and red Roadeo with Sram
Force components did this to me. I'm currently saving for one now. I love
my Sam Hillborne, but the Roadeo will fit some of the faster riding I am
doing much better.

2012-03-15 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Tim - Just saw this; thanks. How does the Atlantis look for fenders
with the 60s? What are the actual measurements between the fork legs
and stays at max tire width?

Anyone want to trade a trike for an Atlantis???

Used the Fargo with 35 mm Kojaks to go to Presanctified (ie, reserved
Eucharist) liturgy last night -- 21 m rt including stop at PO -- as,
with my middle finger knuckle sprained, I can't reliably operate the
single right hand brake lever on the Riv with lights. The Fargo
handles decently with that wheelset, but it is nothing like the magic
of the Rivs.

Tangent #2: Cyo R: I done heerd tell that these don't cast a beam far
enough for'ard for anything but ambling. I have one on the Fargo and
simply aim it high enough to barely catch stop signs a block away: the
beam is fine, in fact quite good: long and broad and wider and more
squared off than that of the regular Cyo. I chose the R for the Fargo
thinking its beam might be better on dirt -- which I think is the
case. Not sure I don't prefer the R to the regular.

[RBW] Re: Bike lust.

2012-03-14 Thread dougP
Same here; Atlantis is my only data point. Biggest tires I've used
are 40 mm so I've got lots of extra room. Here in So Cal the sandy
stretches are short. Off-road is mostly clay adobe that isn't much
different than concrete, so road tires are fine. I like the ride with
the 40 mm Marathon Supremes.

2012-03-13 Thread EricP
This discussion is making me think that in a year or so if things settle
down, maybe should be looking at an Atlantis again. Are times when I miss
the one I sold, although it was seriously too small for me. At my weight
at the time, it worked. Took less effort to get on and off. Doesn't hurt
that Jim at Hiawatha built up one for a customer recently and was able to
see that bike.

Then again, have been trying to figure out a way to justify a SimpleOne
before they are gone.

Ah spring, when bike lust is heavy in the air.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike lust.

2012-03-13 Thread James Warren

Depends on tires. With Jack Brown Greens, very similar. Homer is a little bit racier. Mine are both 700C, 65 cm AHH and 64 cm Atlantis. The bar/seat relationship is about the same though, since Homer's TT upslope is only 1.5 degrees while Atlantis's is 2.5 degrees. That 1 degree difference results in 1 cm of height when projected out along a 62 cm toptube. The Atlantis's wheelbase is a little longer, but keep in mind I don't have one of the newer longer chainstay Atlantises. My Atlantis chainstay is a whopping 0.5 cm longer than that on AHH.

To me, they ride pretty much as designed on paper. Homer is closer to road bike quickness, a country bike that can pass for touring, but with greater weight limitations than Atlantis. I have not overloaded my Homer, but it has done great with moderate loads: loafer bagsand mini-racks front and rear, really fun to ride it this way and feel fast doing so. The Atlantis, on the other hand, demands some baggage, carries it well, and if I am slower on it, I think, "yeah, butwho cares? Look at what I'mcarrying to the party (or campsite!)"

Gun-to-the-head-you-only-get-one-bike: my Atlantis, no hesitation.
It's all a matter of what you need a specific bike to do, and my
Atlantis does everything I need to accomplish. The only mission that
would be s severe stretch would be go-fast with truly fast people.
Fortunately for me, few of my friends are fast. And when they drop
me, I can hop onto a fire road, short cut the route, and catch them
anyway. Stout frame, low gears chubby tires can't be beat.
