[RBW] Re: Bikepacking Kit
My wife and I have used a steripen in Kenya, Nepal, and Cambodia, seemingly with success. For my ride on the GDMBR, I am going to go with a Grayl water purifier bottle (https://www.rei.com/product/898758/grayl-ultralight-water-purifier-bottle). Supposedly screens out 99.9% of virus and bacteria as well as just stuff. It was highly recommended to me by someone who used one on a two week trek in Nepal. His disdain for batteries kept him from using Steripens. I must say, it all seems like witchcraft to me. I’ll take my leftover supply of traveler’s antibiotics as well. Ha, Bob! As some of my trips will attest to, cutting down is easy. Keeping only what is essential ... that’s the tricky bit. Grin. On this trip, the Office of Readings was on the “already but not yet” nature of faith and dawn ... I am always humbled by how contempory prayers can be. Grin. Hi Deacon Patrick, Appreciate the list and write-up. You are an inspiration to actively stripping down to what is essential. I try to teach that to our kids when we are hiking/camping. I definitely understand lauds, vespers, and the rosary too. Bob, spot on! The squeeze bag filter is my plan for if I ever need physical filtration on a semi-regular basis. The Steripen works on bacteria and virus, if I understand correctly. [RBW] Re: Bikepacking Kit
Patrick, The Steripen looks cool. You could throw a Sawyer Squeeze in with that to take care of any physical debris in the water. It takes up very little space and weighs next to nothing. Only downside is it doesn’t work against viruses—but maybe your pen does that—so it’s not a standalone solution for a viral apocalypse. :) Bob -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Lum, I missed your water question. I carry as part of my day saddlebag a Steripen, so refill at water sources along the way. Great for mountain streams, less great for lower down cattle contaminated water, though I’ve used it there too in a pinch. It obviously doesn’t remove physical matter. https://www.steripen.com With abandon, Patrick -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Bikepacking Kit
Tony, aye. Still roasting with the Zen Roaster. We love it. I roast (3) rounded 1/4 cup scoops each morning, which seems to be the max the wee roaster can do. That keeps the six of us in coffee for the next day. Free beans? What a deal! Grin. How long my usual bikepacking trip? I do a fair number of S24Os, S48Os, and then a few where I aim for 8+ but usually they get truncated to 4 days or so by various causes. The food I bring, though cold, is calorie and flavor and satiation dense (quality fat and protein does that). Also, flavor variety in different flavors of jerky or roast. Cold camping while on a low fat, high carb diet would be obnoxious. Grin. Also, keep in mind that fat has 2x the calories per oz. as carbs — very effecient fuel and tastes great too! Essentially the jerkey/butter/creamcheese/cheese thing is a lazy and tastier way of pemmican, which does get tiresome after a 4-5 days. Grin. Folks with memory may find the jerkey thing tiresome sooner — chalk one up for a bludgeoned brain! Grin. Keep in mind that I eat at home the morning I leave and the evening I return, so I don’t carry food for those days. Thus, a 5 day trip, I’d carry 3 days of food. (I carry a day or two extra just in case.) Lum, Mighty Organic is what I’ve used so far. 100% grass fed and organic. 8g per package, so well below the 20-25g for ketogenic (if I remember my numbers correctly? I don’t track it). https://www.mightyorganic.com. We have a dehydrator, but the logistics of running it (it’s loud and I don’t do well with loud) mean We generally don’t make things with it anymore. Patrick, What do you do for water when you are out in the wilds? I think I would go thru all 4 of those bottles in one 24hr period. What kind of keto jerkey are you eating, or do you make your own? I have only found one type of jerky that is really low on carbs (1g/serving) but it is $$$.. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Bikepacking Kit
Are you still zenroasting your beans? I'm a couple months in with my zenroasting. The novelty has worn off but I get perfectly acceptable results... Not as consistent as my local coffee house but definitely good enough. Costs about 30min twice a week to keep us in beans. I've been gifted a couple bags of green beans by co-workers and friends who are amused by my coffee pursuits which is funny and cool. Back to the actual thread topic, Patrick how long are your usual bike packing trips? I see you mention 4 days food... That would be a long time without heated food and brewed coffee for me. But I haven't tried it in years and maybe the being out of doors setting helps. My memories of backpacking in highschool with no fire/limited stove use we're that meals were more about calories than enjoyment. [RBW] Re: Bikepacking Kit
Of beans and butter ... I eat the butter with the meat and cheese ... 8 beans a day atop 8 squares of dark chocolate for cafè mocha crunch. Cold brew is a good idea. I may ponder that, though I’d pre grind the beans and bring more of them. Grin. Great post Patrick, lots of thought, miles and nights out of doors are obvious in your discussion. Two questions on your butter and coffee Bean consumption... How are you eating there butter it? Does it go in a beverage? And for the coffee beans sans fire/stove are you going cold brew?
