It's not *that* hard to build an all-alloy Campy-equipped bicycle. Here's my

Eric, I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't do it, but I also can't
think of any reason why you would want to. Just because you can? or just
to see what it's like?

Or maybe I just can't think of any reason why I would want either 10 speed,
or a return to brifters.

Does it break the rules? What rules? Rules... for a bike build?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1e9Matf19k

If those are the rules, then I'm a scofflaw. My Roadeo likes its 10
speed Campy Record. I pulled the group set off my Colnago
Masterlight, and it's great on the Roadeo.

That's what I've got on my Ram. The cranks are TA Carmina. Brakes
are Dura Ace. I figured that if I paid for it, I can set it up like I
want. I might feel differently about the use of candy-colored tires
or hipster bars barely long enough for a brake lever. There are,
surely, some limits.

2012-02-12 Thread Bill Carter
While most of the RBW crowd seem to prefer bar ends and friction
shifting, there is at least a significant number - myself included -
who like brifters and indexed. I have Shimano STI on one bike, Campy
Ergo on another, both are 9 speed, I like them both. I may switch to
bar ends just for a change when those eventually wear out, but as
others have opined, the central thing about RBW philosophy is to do
what you like and to make your bikes uniquely yours. You'll seldom
see two RBW bikes exactly alike, at least on this list, and much of
the fun is in seeing how differently the bikes are set up. I hope the
new impetus toward coordinated Build Kits does not change that much.
Have at it, and as Grant has advised, be sure to do something to make
it unlike any other bike in the velo universe.

Many more here than in the population at large who like both bar ends
and friction, but not necessarily a majority, and not necessarily for
both. I have indexed bar ends on almost everything in the fleet except
for one bike, which is friction bar ends.

AGREED! and, to dovetail recent posts regarding rapid-rise rear
mechs, if you mate the campy controls with a rapid rise derailer, you
can shift into the higher gears from the drops and sweep the whole way
up the cassette with one push of the thumb when you're on the hoods.
it's pretty sweet. solid too. i run it for racing cyclocross and i
have no issues with shifting in even the worst conditions.
