I have had good luck with Schwalbe Supremes & Almotions, tubed not

haven't tried the very latest version of the Almotions with the Addix

+ 1 for the Big Apples. They're not nearly as nice as the Big Ones I've
been using for a couple of years, but for such flat-resistant tires they
roll very well indeed. I used both the regular and the "LiteSkin" versions
with tubes and they were practically thornproof on dirt, and let only,
roughly, 1 thorn out of 20 penetrate on pavement. I'd come out of the
bosque with, literally, scores of thorns embedded in the tread, brush them
off, and ride home, and have no air loss after a day or several days.

One did feel the weight when pointing the bike uphill.

2020-06-11 Thread Ginz

I just mounted a set of Marathon Green Guard 26" x 2" on Sun CR-18 rims and
they and they measure a disappointing 1.75", barely larger than my labeled
26" x 1.75"s.

I may sell them (mounted but unridden). Maybe I should have gone Big Apple
2" or 2.15"?

That said, I would look at the true specs of the Marathons and make sure
you are getting the actual size you desire relative to the Big Bens.

[RBW] Re: Commuter Tire for Hunq

2020-06-11 Thread ascpgh
While comparing two different tires on a Hunq, I've been commuting on my
Rambouillet while my Disc Trucker has been adjusted to and in use by a
friend right now. The tires are hardly the only difference between the two
but the Schwalbe Marathons (of who know what iteration other than the
ebike-ready labelling) are dreadnoughts compared the the RH Stampede Pass
ELs on the Ram.

Pedalling and coasting ease of the light tires, over each centimeter
travelled, is such a reward that I'll choose the penalty of puncture risk
this time of year. Once I'm back to trudging through the darkness in the
tunnel of my lights I'll remit to the other bike and it's 700 x 40
Marathons, mostly because it has room under fender for my snow tires. I
didn't have to mount them at all this last winter, so the jig may be up on
that proposition. Might have to part ways with that whole bike, buy some
Steilacooms and call it a day.

Once I've had the joy of low rolling suppleness on my commute I've found
myself very aware of the energy necessary to turn those "puncture
resistant" tires and wheels. I won't even go into the simple and effective
Racer brakes on the Ram. Another thread.

2020-06-10 Thread Edwin W
Joe,

I don't think my marathon supremes are bricks, so I went to see what
Schwalbe offers and found so many marathons!! The heaviest Marathon plus
MTB is listed at 1270g* per tire (how much does a brick weigh, anyway?), to
the Marathon E plus (930g), Marathon Plus HS440 (900g), Marathon Plus Tour
HS404 (890g), Marathn GT HS480, GT Tour HS 485, and GT 365 HS475 (all
listed as 765g), is your mind spinning yet, mine is, to the Marathon HS420
(the original, 730g), Marathon Mondial HS 428 (570g), Marathon Almotion
HS453 (500g), Marathon Almotion HS603 (490g), Marathon Racer HS429 (465g -
called on their webpage the "lightest marathon," but apparently not in this
size) and the Marathon Supreme HS469 (440g).

Whew!! Who thinks that many models is a good idea

Liking my marathon supreme 50-622 640g evolution line, folding bead tire
for the rear of my bike,

Edwin
Edwin

*all weights are for 35-622 ex the MTB doesn't have that size

[RBW] Re: Commuter Tire for Hunq

2020-06-09 Thread Dave Grossman
I believe a 29er or 700c is known as a 28 in Europe. As such, Schwalbe
designates their "29er" tires as "28"..

I have liked them a lot actually. I have used quite a few Schwalbe tires
over the years, including Marathon, Marathon Plus, Marathon Supreme, Big
Apple, Fat Frank, Kojack, Sammy Slicks, Thunder Burts, Big Ones.the
list goes on. The Big Ben was up there with usual Schwalbe characteristics
of long lasting, great puncture protection, good grip, etc. They aren't
the lightest tires, but this isn't a race bike either.

I haven't purchased new tires in a few years so I am totally out of the
loop as to what is new. I know the Rene Herse/Compass are all the rage but
I can't spend that much on tires.

As for my preferences, I most want a combination of decent weight, puncture
protection, and low rolling resistance.

[RBW] Re: Commuter Tire for Hunq

2020-06-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Dave,

I presume you mean 29 (700) x 2? Have you liked your Big Bens?

You may want to be more specific in what is important to you (smooth,
supple, or no flats ever as the two extreme examples). Folks here commute
on Rene Hearse ELs, or the beefiest Schwalbe there is. Here is the dizzying
array of Schalbe touring tires:
https://www.schwalbetires.com/bike_tires/road_tires

Of course, with Rene Herse's Endurence + tires, you can have better flat
protection in a still quite supple tire.

Personally, I go with the most supple tire I can without needing to change
more than 4 flats a year. So far that generally means 2 flats or less a
year and the most supple tires. Now that I've written this and am
aproaching needing to change out my rear tire I've doomed myself to a flat
here soon. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick
