[RBW] Re: Dog trailer for bikes - any experience or recommendations?

2017-08-15 Thread gordo
I thought I'd post an update now that the dog has become comfortable in the
trailer and made his maiden voyage:

The Burley Tail Wagon was a cinch to set up and attach to the bike. I
scored a used one on Craigslist and it is just large enough for the pooch.

Wally's gradual approach was key - I first set up the trailer in our living
room and loaded it up with treats hidden in every nook and cranny so that
Pancho (the dog) would become comfortable. I added a rectangular travel
dog bed to the floor of the trailer to prevent sliding and to make it
harder for him to find the treats (I placed them under the bed so that he
would really have to twist around and get comfortable moving within the
space). I did all of this with the main flap open to avoid claustrophobia.
After a few days, I introduced some extra tasty treats (beef lungs) and
closed the flap. After doing this a few times I moved the trailer into the
lobby of our building and attached it to my bike - I then lured Pancho into
the trailer with some beef lung bits and the rest is history. We rode to
the dog park today and he was calm as can be. I'm keeping my fingers
crossed that he will be up for a repeat adventure tomorrow.

Now I need to swap out my granny gear for the smaller 24t - pulling around
a 50 lb dog is no joke!

Thanks again to all who responded with suggestions.

Cheers,

Eric in SF

I once saw a guy towing two Jack Russells in a trailer. The trailer flipped
as he went round a corner (I think he touched the kerb/curb) and the dogs
fell out. They ran to the side of the road and waited obediently while the
guy righted the trailer - almost as if it happened all the time and they
knew the drill!

I had the Solvit. They are very nice and come in two sizes (you will need
the large probably). Like bike frames, they come in aluminum and steel, and
yes; one is heavier and sturdier. I bought it off CL when I was in Michigan
and sold it there too.

[RBW] Re: Dog trailer for bikes - any experience or recommendations?

2017-07-20 Thread 'thalasin' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have a Solvit HoundAbout trailer for my 85 lb lab. Not knowing whether
he'd take to it or not, I didn't want to spend a ton of money on it, and
this one was a decent price while being big enough for my dog. He has done
great in it and really seems to enjoy it. Definitely need a rear fender,
and caution when turning. I do have him leashed in.

As you can imagine, an 85 lb lab will do just about anything for a treat,
so getting him in it was not an issue at all. I've done it enough now that
I can manage getting him in the trailer, secured and zipped in by myself.

The only potential issue I see is if he gets to the point physically (he's
11 now) where he can't or won't climb into the back of the trailer, at
which point a flat bed of some sort might be a better option.

I stay on trails and flat roads, as hauling dog + trailer is quite a
workout but I love being able to bring him along. Also, nothing too speedy
because there are no fast stops with that behind me.

Good luck and let us know what you end up doing!

[RBW] Re: Dog trailer for bikes - any experience or recommendations?

2017-07-20 Thread Deacon Patrick
I'd definitely go with Burley as they have a good and solid hitch system
compared with most other trailers. Additionally, presuming you have a rear
fender, I'd consider going with Burley's cargo trailer. Rather like a dog
in the back of a pickup, so long as you train him to stay in/on the
trailer. Or you can put your dog crate on the trailer as others have
suggested.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Dog trailer for bikes - any experience or recommendations?

2017-07-20 Thread gordo
Thanks Marc and Wally! I'm leaning toward the Tail Wagon and am hoping to
borrow one from a friend within the next few days. The suggestions of
introducing the trailer within the house and slowly building up toward a
full rideis a great one (as well as luring the pooch with treats and a body
harness).

Many thanks,

Eric

I had the Burley Solo trailer for one of my old dogs. Found it just fit
between the bollards on the local trail heads.
I've downsized to a 13 pound milkcrate dog. So he fits nicely on either
front or rear rack. :)

To get any of my dogs used to the carry/pull I would put the trailer/crate
in the living room of the house for a few days. Just so they could get
used to seeing it.
Then coax them into it w/ snacks for a few more days. Then pull or carry
around the living room. Then the driveway and neighborhood. It worked
well for them.

It seems like your new friend has a heart of gold and nerves of steel is
real.

Oh, I've always used the body harnesses to fasten them in. The typical
leash and collar can become a noose easily enough with an accident and
being thrown from the trailer.
