Lubed the pulleys and the pivots. Chirp is gone. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Drive-Train Chirp

2012-02-14 Thread dougP
Don't you just love it when a great plan comes together? And it only
costs 5 minutes?

If it comes back soon, the upper (floating) pulley may be shot. I had
similar found out the pulley runs on a bushing. The bushing had
worn a shoulder on one side, which I think was what chirped. Mine was
intermittent, generally only when shifting, and lube fixed it
temporarily. I recall replacing it with an XTR or similar pulley that
had a real bearing.

[RBW] Re: Drive-Train Chirp

2012-02-11 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I would first make sure there's no bird caught in your derailleur
cage... :)

Seriously, are your gears indexed? If so, is the chain properly
seated (centered) on the cogs when you hear the chirping? Can you
micro-adjust the shifter/cable to see if this eliminates it? Also,
do any of your cassette/freewheel cogs show excessive wear/deformity?
The list of possibilities should be short...

Good luck,
BB

Most of the chirps when shifting I've heard seem to come from the
  derailleur pulleys.
