[RBW] Re: Early Christmas - Heron Touring

2015-12-10 Thread MartyG
Anyone have a copy of BQ Vol 3 #1 that I can buy or take a look at? I
learned it has a review of this bike and though it would add to my
knowledge base. Thanks for digging!

A great find, indeed! A bike under the tree was--twin Schwinn
Stingrays--was the happiest Christmas morning for my brother and me one
year. These days I ride my Heron Touring (an eBay purchase) nearly every
day; it fits me perfectly. I have NOS Heron Road frame yet to build up, as
well. Thanks for story, and the additional photos. --Tom

[RBW] Re: Early Christmas - Heron Touring

2015-12-06 Thread MartyG
Frame is a 55cm C-T. Tubing is Reynolds 531 throughout. Seatpost is a
RockShox suspension-type. My wife uses something similar now. Interesting
find when I tore it down for a closer look: bottom bracket is a Campagnolo.
Crankarms are TA, and I've heard they changed the taper on the early
Zephyrs. Cranks are not marked with the Zephyr name as later ones were.
Chainrings are Ritchey. Seems to fit up well, so I plan to leave well
enough alone. Might check with Riv to see if anyone (well, Grant I suppose)
recalls spec'ing that combo back in the day. An article I came across talks
about the early Herons using Ritchey Logic's until the Zephyr's appeared.
Most of the other specs in this article match up pretty close, although the
rims are Sun CR18.

Came with the nice Rhode Gear mirror that are something of a cult item
these days. Nitto big rack out back. I learned the original owner was an
engineer and did a number of international tours. Given the component mix
and attention to detail, him being an engineer made perfect sense.

2015-12-06 Thread George Schick
That bike IS a great find. I'm sure she'll be tickled with it. Just out
of curiosity, is that seat post one of those shock-absorber types? Kinda
looks that way in the photo because of its small diameter and unusual
fitting around the clamp. Kinda reminds me of the tandem I saw out on the
trail a couple of weeks ago. They were going at a hell-bent-for-election
speed and the stoker was standing up almost all the time. And the saddle
was one of those wide, wide, heavily padded jobs like you see on those
trikes oldsters ride in Florida. Clearly, she must be having saddle
comfort problems and probably hasn't been getting the right advice about
how to best take care of them.
