2019-01-21 Thread Neil Doran
Hello Ash - Samuel P Taylor is a great place for kids. The Cross Marin
Trail runs right through it, and is a 3-4 mile stretch of perfect, flat
bike path through the redwoods. It runs right along Lagunitas Creek the
whole way, with many opportunities for playing in the creek and checking
stuff out. Plus a couple of great, short hikes as well.

As far as other kid-friendly riding, I think the pickings are rather slim,
but there are some cool options in Pt Reyes...one idea is driving out to
the Pt Reyes visitors center and ride out the Bear Valley Trail...probably
3 miles of wide fire road, then you gotta lock the bikes and walk the rest
of the way to the ocean. Actually, that is a pretty fun outing...the ocean
view is splendid from the bluffs, but there is no beach access.

Another idea is to park at the hostel near the end of Limantour Road and
ride the 2.5 miles of dirt road out to Coast Camp...great beach access
there, along with creeks running into the ocean...generally very kid
friendly.

Both spots are only a short drive from SPT.

Hey Justin, thanks a ton for making this happen!

I'll be accompanied by my 7 yr old son, who will be on his bike trailer.
Hence, joining the regular ride group does not seem feasible. If anybody
else is on the same boat, we can figure out a shorter/easier ride. The
plan would be something like drive to a place that is 10-15 miles from the
campsite and then ride. I'm 100% unfamiliar with the area. Any
suggestions for this type of ride would be great!

Wow, good job on getting the sites and doing all the heavy lifting for this
not-meeting!

The nearby lagunitas general store has most things needed for a good
camping trip, and is about 2 miles from the campsite so coordinating food,
beers, etc. would be pretty simple. Just send out a refueling party at the
end of a day.

Don't move firewood! The lagunitas store and camp host usually have bundles
for sale ~$10, and are easily pack able via basket or pannier.

[RBW] Re: FotR: Updates, info, questions

2019-01-18 Thread Neil Doran
Most excellent! Was just wondering what the status was. Definitely in here.

I'm still up for rear-leading the Pine Mountain-BoFax ride...looks like it
is about 33 miles, probably just about 50/50 dirt to pavement...lotsa
climbing, but only significant one (I think) is pavement after Alpine Dam.
This one has lots to offer..stellar views (depending on fog), history (Pine
Mt Truck Road, the top of RePack, etc.), side trips galore (Tamarancho,
Pine Mountain, RePack, etc.) for anyone who wants more (not me).

Going our own on food and drink sounds simple to me.

If I can carve out the time I intend to take the train down and do the
'whole enchilada', riding through SF and Marin...but if I drive, I can
bring large quantities of firewood and related supplies. But I would rather
ride.

Thank you for doing the legwork on this.
