[RBW] Re: Front Racks with Top of Fork Attachment

2015-11-04 Thread Bill Lindsay
The Appaloosa crown includes a fork crown top boss that draws a ton of
attention to itself. I'm hoping they have a new Nitto rack in the works to
fit that crown.

It opens up possibilities for rear racks to be mounted up front as well -
I'll be test fitting a Nitto R15 on my Clem since I have it on another bike
(in the rear as intended) but have yet to actually use it.
As Ron mentioned, custom built racks would definitely utilize the top of
fork crown mounts. I'm considering having Joel from Clockwork make a custom
semi-porteur rack attaching to the mid-fork and top of crown attachments.

[RBW] Re: Front Racks with Top of Fork Attachment

2015-11-04 Thread Leslie
I took a Tubus Cosmo (which is normally a rear rack), and mounted it onto
the front of my Bombadil:

I then put a Platrack on top of it:

At that point, I normally ziptie a Wald basket onto the top of the
Platrack; the Platrack makes a great foundation for the basket.

2015-11-04 Thread Tim Gavin
The clamps and struts on those Surly racks are very secure and quite
adaptable. They seem like the perfect solution.

I mount a Surly Nice Rack on the rear of my Fatbike. I used that rack
because it's so adjustable, and the fat bike is, well, big-boned.

I'll also also add that with Surly's "rear rack upper kit" you can mount
many other racks (VO and Soma porteur for example) to the top braze on
also. Here's a couple ideas , but these are just 2 . The Surly mounts can
be used with any like tube diameter racks . Limitless possibilities .

[RBW] Re: Front Racks with Top of Fork Attachment

2015-11-03 Thread Ron Mc

On my Viner cross frame, I had to improvise, since it has no holes of any
kind. Mark's Rack with it's M6 rod bolts at the rear is the one that will
work.

I accomplished the same thing as fork crown bosses using Tubus LM-1 clamps,
and attached the front struts to Paul canti mounts with a pair of
L-brackets from McMaster.
I'm very happy with it - it's rock solid - and the only way to mount a
front rack on this bike.
I started a thread about it down the page.

I'll see if I can get a photo but a Tubus Duo mounts to the hourglass
eyelet, with the lower eye attached to the fork blade with a big P-clamp.
Not elegant & half a bubble off level but it's functional. Large Ortleibs
have plenty of ground clearance.
