2017-05-17 Thread Tim Gavin
Clayton-
My experience with upright bars on my Riv was similar. I tried Moustache
bars, which were great for around town riding but lacked enough comfortable
hand positions for long rides. I felt the same lack of a drop position
meant I couldn't stretch out and put the power down.

I changed the staches out for Nitto B135 Randonneurs and I'm very happy. I
use a Technomic stem and put the bar tops a tad above the saddle height
(which works with my moderate flexibility).

I like upright bars on trail- or commuter-oriented bikes, but for long
rides (>15 miles) I prefer drops.

One other option. Not mentioned is to just shorten your stem rather than
raising it. Stems can be found cheap on this list for experimentation.
Decreasing reach can alleviate neck soreness.

Before changing bars you may want to consider a dirt drop stem. It will get

I'll add in here, I've never tried an Alba, but I've never had a bike with
a top tube long enough for it. Most Riv frames would be perfect with
Albas.
Two that I'm a huge fan of are the original Moustache and Ahearne Map bar -
both on shorter-top-tube frames.
Moustache was my first, about ten years ago, when I could no longer find a
comfortable position over my long GB stem and Maes bars.
For both of these bars, good reach measurements and choosing the correct
(usually short reach) stem is everything.
To get a Moustache in the right place, reach on your stem should be 2
inches shorter than what you use on drop bars. They also don't grab in the
intuitive place.

The 3 best positions are finger-stretch from the brakes (only center your
hands on the brakes when you're about to use full brake),way outside for
added control, and especially on the wide hoods for distance.

I'll add about Map bars - properly set up, they are the most relaxed I've
ever had my hands - hooked just in front of the grips is my favorite
position, and grabbing the grips for extra control.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Bliss

2017-05-15 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I didn't specifically _swap_ from drop bars to Albastaches, but when I put
together my commute bike I decided I wanted to try Albastache bars and have
found a combination that seems to work really well for me. Albastache bars,
Dia Compe stoker hand supports out front, a thumb shifter, and reverse
brake levers. I love how wide the upright position is, I love still being
able to brake (with the little fingers) from my preferred cruise position
right at the start of the curves, and there's also the extra-stretched-out
position on the forward hand supports for mixing things up. The only thing
that's not really working well is the thumbie-mounted Silver friction
shifter (cut down lever with rubber grip). It's not holding tension
properly and has to be snugged tight at least once per ride, sometimes
more. But that's a subject for another thread. I did notice that with the
Albastache, it was really important to get the stem up higher than the
saddle to avoid feeling like I was going to go over the handlebars during
stops. Now that I've done that, I think this setup is a keeper.

What's particularly good about them that something like a set of
Lauterwasser bars wouldn't cover? If you don't need a pop-up position,
want the two hand angles you'd get with drops, and don't want the
longitudinal hand positions to be pulled way back, that /might/ be a good
way to go.(I've found that the Lauterwasser bars gave me about 80% of
it; not having a pop-up position for navigating traffic and not being able
to get them nearly as low as I like wrote them off, but they're still
kicking around my bike mess because hope springs eternal.)

I love my New Moustache. Moustache 2.0. Albastache. Call 'um whatcha want,
they are delightful to ride. Both my steeds sport them, and they are
equally at home on open road for a long day in the saddle and on technical
singletrack and a long day out of the saddle (standing on the pedals). They
have a wondrous subtlety of confident control on the technical single track
that is delicious. On non-technical terrain (trail, dirt, paved) they
simply flow, going invisible with the rest of the bike. Took me a while to
dial them in, preferring a higher, shorter stem (I'm pretty slow and
dim-witted and methotical about dialing in, so it takes me years rather
than days. But once I get there I'm there.).

Thanks for the feedback. I have Noodles on my Sam set slightly above saddle
height. I can't say enough about how great these bars are. Perfectly
comfortable drop bars in every way. So what's the problem right?? I am one
who always has dealt with some degree of neck pain from keeping my head up
in a position where I can see the road. Granted the quill stem has really
helped this situation but I am still finding that I am having pain on rides
at 2 hours long or longer. I am thinking about the Albastache because I
won't have to make other cockpit changes with a new stem and brake levers.
I fear I will be getting into a slippery slope but I would do anything to
ride longer distances relatively pain free. The next thing I will try is
raising the bars up even a little more to see if that changes anything. The
next step may be to try the Albastache bars but I am reluctant to give up
my Noodles which I love.
