These guys are so great, friendly helpful, I wouldn't care if they were selling assault weapons and Argentinian grilling racks along side their bikes. Whenever I email, call or drop by to ask a question or buy something, they are so cheery and helpful, they erase a weeks worth of unpleasant workplace residue from my soul. I wish I worked there! Besides, a nice Swedish axe handle emerging from my saddlebag would probably discourage most obnoxious drivers in my neighborhood from trying to run me off the road. I like seeing someone with enough cojones to carry whatever he likes on his store's shelves. It reminds me of the old general stores on the Big Island (that's THE island of Hawaii) that used to carry everything you ever really needed. I will now step off my soap box and finish my martini. [RBW] Re: I'm not sure I get the connection between bikes and hatchets...
I've had an axe since I was @ 10. My step-dad ran a firewood business so I was handed a axe (hatchet, but seemed like an axe to a 10yo!) and told to get limbing. I spent half of my weekends in the mountains felling trees on forest service contracts to reduce fire danger. We would drag them out via quad, load em up and I would spend my weeknights cutting, splitting, and stacking. I did this from age 13 to 17. Despite chainsaws, hydraulic splitters etc, we always kept several axes on hand that saw heavy use. It was generally my responsibility to keep them honed and oiled which I enjoyed. I did learn that not all axe heads are created equal and the poor ones quickly made way to the scrap bin. That said, every True Temper head we worked with was exemplary, readily available, and inexpensive. I probably have 5 axes. All found thrifting or garage sale. All less than a five spot each. All of them needed edge attention, and most handles. I've know about Gransfors for a long time, and admit I have some luxury lust. But then I think about the beautifully functional US made axes I brought back to life and the lust turns to silly. To bring this back on topic, I have never considered or needed an axe while on my bike despite camping and back wood excursions. Maybe I never made the connection because I only own full size axes and not a proper hatchet? On a side note, I wonder how many healthy trees have been needlessly downed by all the fashionjacks just wanting to instagram their best mades, GB's etc. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: I'm not sure I get the connection between bikes and hatchets...
I am really saving my pennies for the Riv Tea and Crumpet. I just hope it is in the works. At one point in my life I worked at two different, small family run businesses. (camping store and bike shop). Both great places. But both owners would stock non traditional items sometimes just because they liked them and wanted to raise the profile of a certain item or company. It makes one feel kinda like a modern-day Daniel Boone...It's just nice having an axe in your saddlebag... It also may offer leverage in preventing a potential road-rage incident from escalating... hey, I'm just saying... When I was growing up we used a can of Raid wasp and hornet killer for that. Works on bears too, if you are in a bind, trust me. IMO it's more a Grant neat thing made in a little shop in Sweden connection than bike connection. I don't quite get it for biking, either, but it's an interesting thing to look at/know about which I wouldn't have come across any other way. Joe not a hatchet man Bernard Vallejo, CA. They are cool. Hand made. Too heavy maybe for a multi-day camping trip, but GP champions the S240. For an over nighter, why not bring a fun axe to prep your fire? [RBW] Re: I'm not sure I get the connection between bikes and hatchets...
Of course, S24O might explain why I don't get it as a cycling tool. I've never bike camped, and the image I get of such an endeavor is me in the woods with a smartphone, scrolling through Twitter and hoping the scary animals don't get me. For a cyclist, I'm not very outdoorsy :) Joe is my room ready Bernard Vallejo, CA. On Monday, July 1, 2013 6:11:12 PM UTC-7, Matthew J wrote: They are cool. Hand made.
