[RBW] Re: If I start a new thread, does it get emailed to everyone as well as getting posted here?

2013-04-27 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Just as a quick follow-up, I was rolling through my pop3 mail account, and
did get three separate emails. They had three different time stamps and
slightly different subject lines or content formatting.

So, there is a possibility that you clicked send rather than save draft,
and a distinct possibility that a google-group digital hiccup was
involved.

Ok auditions done and it's time to ride!

[RBW] Re: If I start a new thread, does it get emailed to everyone as well as getting posted here?

2013-04-27 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Wow. Spot-on answers from everyone. Thank you!

For the "official, admin-generated response": No. This is not your
responsibility.

Each group member has the ability to control their viewing/receiving
methods.

Just to take an inference from your post and make broader example, if
another group member contacted you directly with a complaint about this,
that's unfortunate.

Since this group evolved from an email-only genre, it's understandable that
there might still be some confusion, especially if you aren't regularly
interacting with the group.

This group structure is a hybrid of both email and web types - you can
choose to interact with the group solely via email (and the experience
differs slightly whether you use web-based email or a pop3 client, as well
as whether you receive the emails in individual or digest form), or you
choose to interact with the group via a web interface. When we shifted to
a google group, at least half of the newer users sign up with "no email".
It's probably more, but I've yet to really analyze that. A quick scan of
random chunks of members reveals a majority still receive an email for
each post.

All this is changeable under your "Settings" when you are logged into
google groups.

Anyway, hope that answers it!

And Google sometimes gets over excited about posts, delivering the same one
multiple times.

2013-04-27 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I read the list via gmail and three different ads for what seems to be the
same bar showed up at three different times.

Not a big deal, though I think that one ought to edit one's ad offline and
post it once -- a rule I often neglect because I am too hasty and leave
things out; I will try to follow it more strictly myself.

I get the list in digest form, so I don't get individual emails, but I do
reply and read via the web-page; I saw it once in the digest, and then I
see it here. No multiples.

If people get multiple copies of something, it's their settings, not
yours.

Nothing you did. Each member can choose to get an email for each topic or
each post or a daily digest or nothing at all and read it all online.
