I've seen you post on this subject before. Are you saying you've gone three days without eating anything, while being physically active? Somehow that does not seem healthy to me. Surely there are some downsides to such behavior? Eric Peterson On Friday, September 5, 2014 5:05:44 PM UTC-5, Deacon Patrick wrote: True, Garth, as far as it goes. [RBW] Re: In-Racer Sports Nutrition?
Yes, Eric. 5-8 hours of bike riding on mountain trails each of the three days, without food (I had it with me, just was never hungry). Usually, I eat once a day. Once you understand that our body has enough fat to power us easily for a long time (even if you're down to 5% body fat), and once you have your body trained to function and excel in fat burning mode (vs fat storing mode, which is triggered by eating carbs), then going for three days is not a big deal, though I've only done it a couple times as I'm usually perfectly happy to eat my meal a day when I'm out there (I eat two a day at home). So a 8-10 hour ride without is really no big deal. Seriously. Google fat burning vs. storing and see what you get. Re: [RBW] Re: In-Racer Sports Nutrition?
This reminds me of my teenage days when I would go out for 4 hour Sunday afternoon rides, pushing the pace from the driveway, in hilly terrain at 5 to 7K feet under the equatorial African sun - 90 miles south of the equator. Heavy bikes with limited gearing, too, and concrete tires. It never occurred to me to take food, or water for that matter. On the return, I'd see white spots on the road and have to bail to foot at every little incline. Young, stupid, and healthy, I guess. People eat everything under the Sun . . .. lol and that's what it's there for ! What you eat only matters to the extent you make it a matter , and you can quote me on that ! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: In-Racer Sports Nutrition?
True, Garth, as far as it goes. But there is a clear choice: Burn primarily carbs, or burn primarily fat. The body has enough carbs in system for 1-2 hours before crashing, enough fat for days (I've done three days) before crashing (though after a day the intensity drops as the body has to replenish carbs via the liver). A lot of people don't realize they don't have to eat constantly while physically active, while still being able to perform equally well if not better. [RBW] Re: In-Racer Sports Nutrition?
Well said Garth. I try to drink something with calories/electrolytes every 15-20 minutes, when riding something longer than 200k. (Not racing, trust me on this one) But the convenience store has useful foods like V-8, grapefruit juice, canned coffee drinks, Gatorade, fig bars, nuts, bananas, Pop Tarts (I have never gone there), corn dogs (nor there either), hard boiled eggs, deviled eggs, premade sandwiches (yuck). For the homebrew enthusiast, the Italian Fruitcake recipe in the Moosewood Desserts cookbook is amazing. Peanut butter and/or Nutella on raisin bread. Any of Allen Lim's rice cake creations, too. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
