Seconding Sam Taylor and Butano, both.
Memorial Park is closer than Butano, but is reservation-only (at least
for cars) and seems to be crowded all the time, now.

In addition to the suggestions going north, you can also go south.
(Where are you starting?) I think Half Moon Bay would be within 50
miles. Another Marin location I've camped at, though not recently, is
China Camp State Park. It was fine.

I would contact China Camp to see what the camping status is currently.

They have been working on the water pipes on the way out to the park over
the past few weeks, and there was some sign on the entrance to the
campground this morning which I didn't read. But, the main entrance gate to
the campground was closed.

They have a hiker/biker area which is not as protected as the main area (and
may remain open to walk/bike-ins even when they are full up) but has
tables. You have to walk a ways to the restroom.

There's also Pomo Canyon and Sonoma Coast state campgrounds. They are
primitive, no reservation, walk (or ride) in. Close to Jenner on the
south side of the Russian River. They get busy this time of year, but
if you show up before Friday afternoon I think you'll be alright.
Close to there there's also Bodega Dunes and Wright's Beach.

Follow Willow Creek Road east (bikes only) up to Occidental and Loop
back over Coleman Valley Road for a day loop. Hilly but scenic, and
be cautious on Hwy 1.

I like those campgrounds, but I wouldn't say they were an EASY 30-50

Thank you all for these great suggestions. I am in the city and have
done the ride to China camp. I loved it! Another option that I am
considering is Butano State Park. The main issue is most camp grounds
are already booked! Should be able to find something though with so
many choices...

From what I understand, Samuel P. Taylor park, which is about 30 miles from

be best to verify that.

I know this is true of SP Taylor and Half Moon Bay. I'd recommend Half

Butano is a nice spot, but no showers.

Not an easy ride from the City, though. I reckon it would take the

I second the suggestion of Half Moon Bay. The hiker/biker site is just
off the beach and separated from the drive-in part of the campground.
Restrooms and showers are nearby and well maintained. Lots of good

You could try camping in the Marin Headlands near Sausalito, CA, but
you'll need to make reservations:

Note, there's no fees (yet) except for kirby cove, and if its too

Good Luck!
