Just wanted to follow up that I ended up with a Arcteryx Atom LT Hoody and I can't wait to wear it! I might just wait until they have a full price coupon and grab one. And of course, hunt the CL ads for a local used version! The Revelate Powerline has really become a riding staple for me in the colder months. It is so comfy, fits well, has a great hood you can mount under your helmet, and a solid chest pocket. Its MUSA and affordable. Highly recommended if looking for a new winter piece that can be layered in all conditions. I wear it as a light jacket as well, but I want something cut a bit different and with more repellency which is why I am interested in the Atom. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Midweight Hoody Recommendation
Although not a hoody, I have found Portland Cycleware long sleeve merino wool jerseys to be incredibly useful as a daily rider and bike commuter. They are heavy weight wool. Don’t cause me to itch at all. Look good on the bike or for a beer afterward. Sooo comfortable warm but never hot. Where's most of your riding? A shell as the outermost surface, like a Patagonia Houdini, keeps wind from causing convective heat loss, staves off some wetness and you will have a very useful item benefiting you across a wide spectrum of weather and temperatures when you put it over a range of insulation or base layers. it's very packable and able to come off before a base/insulating layer. I have a Mammut full zip hoody soft shell not too different from the Arcteryx with some insulating fleece lining and I find it to be very limited for use while cycling if it's above 32°. Re: [RBW] Re: Midweight Hoody Recommendation
OK, apologies for tangentially-related anecdotes, but I want to name two other companies that come close in terms of customer service and general stand-behind-it-ness: Domke and Xtracycle. Domke makes various camera bags here in the US. Their classics are thick cotton canvas that aren't waterproof per se but can absorb a lot of water and keep it away from your gear. They can be waxed, and you can buy them waxed. I have about 6 of them for various kinds of adventures. I had one that had a strap that had torn a bit and was separating, probably from rubbing against my belt for 6 years most days. I emailed Domke (in Long Island, New York) and asked if they knew a local tailor/seamstress who could work with canvas this thick and either fix or replace the strap. They replied asking for a receipt; I replied that there's not point because I had had it for at least 6 years and their warranty doesn't go back that far. They asked me to send the bag in so they could inspect the tear, and a few days later I got a brand new one in the mail. Same thing happened with Xtracycle - I asked which model would replace my no-longer made cargo bike bags with deteriorating lining, and they said basically "don't bother buying them - we'll send you a new pair. We don't like that yours wore out so quickly" even though I left them out in the weather all day every day (and was open about it). For what it's worth, which may indeed be quite a bit, and forgive me if I have already shared this story: Patagonia went out of their way to make sure that their Torrentshell was the last rain jacket I'll ever need. I walked into their local retail outlet with the sole intention of handing over my (tattered, stained, 10? 11? 12? year old) jacket for repair or recycling, and basically got strong-armed into grabbing a brand new one off the rack. No receipt or means to prove I was the original owner. Could've found it in the gutter for all they knew, and the condition looked like I did. I protested, they insisted. They even thrust a retail receipt into my clammy palm, "For warranty and returns". Assuming I get similar mileage from Mk II, totally outlay works out to somewhere around 50 cents a month. If you can find a Patagonia garment that works for you, only Riv comes close in terms of customer service and general stand-behind-it-ness. [RBW] Re: Midweight Hoody Recommendation
I like their clothing too Dave, so much so I bought 2 of the Squamish Hoodies a few years ago in different colors, on sale of course ! They easily make the best fitting hoods and with functional adjustments if called for. I get the price consideration, but do it all jackets like those tend to be high priced to start with. Not that they need to , but because they can. I'm not recommending the Squamish by any means, I like it because it's high breathability and un-totally-windproofness lends itself to a great range of temps and activities walking or riding or whatever, so I can customize what I wear underneath, which is basically anything. That's why I never bought a all-in-one kinda jacket as it has a fixed amount of insulation whereas just the shell offers unlimited choices underneath or over top. Sometimes I'll even wear it with a Mountain Hardwear super thin wind resistant vest that has a mesh back, for extra wind buffer on the chest then take one or the other off as my body temp raises. The Squamish hood is just darn perfect too, it fits like it was custom made. It too has a high retail price, much moreso than even a Patagucci Houdini that for me sucked in every way and wouldn't wear if was free. The "just works for me" factor trumps whatever the Squamish may cost, I would pay retail for it if needed . On Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at 8:53:05 AM UTC-4, Dave Grossman wrote: > > I know Garth. Hey Dave . don't let the buts butt you from wearing what suits you. Backcountry even has some colors for 30% off , so no excuses !
