[RBW] Re: New Riv custom mixte - what I'm thinking for colour and build
Tim...I'd love to see the colour you are talking about , if you have a photo; that sounds really close to what I want. Anyhow, the Riv site directed me to the Joe Bell Imron PDF...but from what you're saying , that exact colour might not be available...but I expect JB will come up with a pretty close equivalent...oh and one other thing...going for old-school , not Viking style Riv decals. Also , Grant told me that I can have slightly less rococo lugs than , say , the Glorius , so I went with that. About the gearing...I like 36-38 for the inner chain ring...My PX-10 SS has a 36 X 20 , which with a tailwind or on a downhill grade , I'm spun out...OTOH into a wind or grade, I'm good. I know it sounds like a bit of a wimpy gear , but there it is. It may be that this bike morphs into a 1 X 9 ; that's not a bad alternative either. Believe it or not, with my multi-geared bikes , I shift when I have to, but I really don't shift a lot. So, I'm actually very interested in y'all's feedback regarding gearing so thanks for all comments! On Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 5:51:34 PM UTC-6, Tim wrote: > > Maybe someone can enlighten me? Maybe someone can enlighten me? When I floated an Imron color (from Eric's campy only site) to Mitch Pryor for my new rando bike, he told me it was no longer available due to the toxicity of the paint. He uses PPG paint, and I chose my color from their online tool. I was looking for a deep, metallic maroon-type color. I've only seen photos of the bike but it looks great. Mitch had it at NAHBS. Back to the point...is Imron still available. From what I see on the google way back machine, maybe it is, but with a changed formula? The original seems to have been outlawed in CA in the '80s. Just curious. But the bike sounds great Ryan, with a really nice build. But I might agree with Bill that even in a non-hilly area you might find the 40 tooth big ring a bit small, even for a spinner. Just need to add pedals, bags, cages and I'm in business! http://www.flickr.com/photos/17053...@n02/sets/72157623066924065/ I'm surprised Rivendell does not build bikes with crossed shifter cables. It reduces friction, lets you run shorter cables, and cuts down on head tube rub. Sheldon Brown's description is below. Jay Hartman Criss-Cross Cables Most bicycles with handlebar-mounted shifters run the rear cable on the right, the front on the left. This causes some awkwardness in routing the length of housing from the shift lever to the frame stops. Due to the need to allow these housings to be long enough to permit the bars to be turned all the way back and forth, the housings often wind up making a reverse bend--for instance, the rear will go from the shifter, which is on the right, swing forward and cross over past the centerline of the bicycle, then back over to the right side of the top tube, before heading down the down tube. These extra bends increase friction, and the fairly forcible contact between the housing and the side of the top tube can damage the finish. A neat solution to this is to run the cables criss-cross style: The rear runs from the lever, (on the right) around the top tube, and to the cable stop on the *left* side of the down tube! The front cable crosses over similarly from the left side of the handlebar to the right side of the down tube. The bare cables then cross one another under the middle of the down tube, making an X. The cables may touch where they cross, but they will do so very lightly, since they are both straight...the tiny bit of friction at this crossing is more than offset by the reduction in friction in the smoother-flowing cable housings. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Interesting. I trust that Mark knew what he was doing. It shifts flawlessly and to get the cables to rub on the headtube would require a very sharp turn if the bars which would likely result in bigger concerns. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. When you look at JB Blues on a bike with those great sidepulls, and you know it's all going to work so great and ride so well and be easy to maintain and always look good with age and be comfortable, all these things just add to how great it looks. It looks a lot like an AHH (due to the clearance and sidepulls) or maybe between that and a Ram, but with all the extra sha-bling! of a custom. I hope you're out loving it right now. Also, it reminds me a bit of when I got my AHH. (I'm assuming that Rivendell assembled it for you.) Even though I've done a couple of assemblies myself, there is nothing better, after investing in a Rivendell, to have them send you the complete bike assembled and dialed in the way they assemble it. Beautiful bike. When the time comes for touch-up paint, try Autocolor Service in Oregon, telephone 1-866-672-8201. Autocolor's House of Kolor touch-up paints are made to brush on, match perfectly, and look much better than touch-up paints that are made to spray on. Enjoy the bike. I'm not entirely sure other than there was a long list of folks ahead of me. Curt and Mark were both building at the time I placed the order but after Curt stopped building Rivs I imagine the entire queue fell on Mark's shoulders. He works these in around his own frames. To be fair, Grant was quite clear about customs not being for those who couldn't afford to wait. Once I have it, the wait will be the furthest thing from my mind. Re: [RBW] Re: New Riv Custom
I'm not Brad but have a similar story . I got my custom in November of 2008. My wait time was a bit more that 3 yrs. I too was in the same Curt/Mark N builder transition that Brad was. Since I had a Romulus to ride during the wait time it was no big deal to me.
