OK...I'm convinced! Looks like my mixte will probably have the long
stays...I'm assuming it will...but it's going to be a new experience and
probably a very pleasant one!

[RBW] Re: New purple custom mixte - not mine but nice Minnesota Viking purple

2016-11-09 Thread Bob K.
I've said it on this list before, but let me reiterate. I am a proud Sam
owner. I love it. It's so smooth and comfortable and surprisingly nimble
given it's relatively stout nature. It's versatility and
jack-of-all-trades-ness has it firmly entrenched as one of the most Riv-ish
Rivs, in my opinion. It's a wonderful bike.

Meandering to the point: the only bike that I've ever ridden that knocked
my Sam off its pedestal was a Cheviot with its lonng stays. It's hard
to explain, and perhaps folks use this descriptor too often, but it almost
felt like the Cheviot screamed, "Come on! Go faster!" I found myself in the
middle of the road making graceful, unnecessarily swooping turns, laughing
and pedaling ever-harder. As bill said, it felt like my first bike. A month
or so later, a Cheviot in my size popped on on CL in Boston and I almost
had my buddy scoop it up for me, which would've in turn forced me to sell
my beloved Sam. It was that fun to ride.

In other words, Eric, you should ride one! It might not turn out to be your
style, but it'd be a great experience regardless!

[RBW] Re: New purple custom mixte - not mine but nice Minnesota Viking purple

2016-11-08 Thread Garth

Tough to criticize the long stays Eric unless you've ridden such a
bike. As for the "look" of it, I can tell you how much time I spend just
"looking" at my bike as an object, maybe put it up on the wall next to a
flower vase, maybe hung on the wall with my trophy fish and bear .
hmmm that'd be zero minutes ! Ahahaahahahahahaha !

Bike design is so often copy-cat , then you think a bike is "supposed"
to look that way, when it's not that way at all. Or "this look" means "it
rides this certain way". Blah blah blah, meaningless ! Popularity and
consensus means nothing to me, I would have liked a very long stay bike
back around 2000 actually. Not every bike of mine, but one bike. It's like
that with clothes too. I don't give a hoot what anyone thinks of the
clothes I wear, because I actually WEAR them and don't adore them as
"trophies of hipness" ! I wear them because I want to feel as if I wasn't
wearing anything, meaning I don't notice them. All those tight arsed design
trends that are supposed to look "hip" feel like wearing straight jackets
for your legs. "Hip" if anything is just being yourself , duh !

So same with bike, I want a bike that rides like I'm not even
"efforting" at all, the bike just kinda goes away and you're just being.
How that "looks" is not it's purpose, how it rides, is .

[RBW] Re: New purple custom mixte - not mine but nice Minnesota Viking purple

2016-11-08 Thread Eric
Bill, firstly I saw your mention about Jitensha Studio on the IBob list.
Totally spot on! I've visited numerous times over the past 15 years...and
it's never been open!

But also, my mention about the stays & general beach cruiser design is not
meant to conflate the "unracer" and the "
stern bike-face" people.

Instead I think such builds such as this:

http://cdn3.volusion.com/ctxtv.wmppt/v/vspfiles/photos/staff3-2.jpg?1474043677

...including the long stays and naming of bikes such as "Mike Jones III
Jr." or whatever is that the brand is moving away from bikes that I fell in
love with.

To put it another way, these bikes are not my "rod", baby!

*"When Grant Petersen was 19, he ordered a custom bamboo fly rod made by
Doug Merrick of the Winston Rod Company . “I
wanted red winding on the guides — ‘Like a Leonard
rod,’ I said — and a cork grip shaped like a
Payne rod. They were two other fancy
rods,” explains Peterson. Merrick refused. “I won’t do it,” he told
Petersen. “It wouldn’t be my rod, then.” *

I love the long stays on my Appaloosa. I couldn't tell ya how they affect the
ride - it rides great, like every Riv I've owned - but the stretched look gives
it a chopper vibe for me. I'd love to put a rod-operated "suicide shifter"
front detailer on it ;-)

I agree! That bike looks like it should be ridden joyfully by somebody who

It neither surprises nor bothers me that people who want to have more of a

Either way, I hope everyone gets what they are after out of their bicycles

One more thing you can't do as easily on a long chainstay bike: pop
wheelies. Those of you who want a mixte cruiser bike for frequent popping
wheelies should buy one with short chainstays.

Eric asked what the chainstay length was. If you copy the side view image
and put it in powerpoint, you can draw lines on the photo and let
powerpoint tell you the length of those lines. When I do that, I "measure"
the chainstays as just a bit shorter than the rim diameter. If the rim
diameter is 584mm, the chainstays are ~540mm, by my reckoning.
