Re: [RBW] Re: Off topic question: portable cd players

2017-01-20 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. I've been told that, for MP3-level quality, which is all I expect
(since eventually, I hope to convert all my CDs to MP3 files), and given
that the amp is part of the speaker system, a Discman will perform fine.
I'll look for one of these, or a highly reviewed clone.

2017-01-20 Thread Leslie
I just picked up a Sony CD player from an old friend who'd gotten it for
his kid's dorm, but they never used it, so he was getting rid of stuff
got it cheap, but is really nice. Actually, I have a bit of an eclectic
setup, a NAD receiver, a Sansui TU-717 tuner, a BIC turntable, the Sony CD
player, with some Paradigm speakers... nothing cost much of anything at
all, a lot was almost given to me, but it's far better than just good
enough, fwiw

Regarding inexpensive CD players
I seem to recall that there was a hifi audio guy, Gary Krakow, who liked
the idea of using original Playstations as a CD player for "hifi systems on
the cheap".

Thing is, w/ a CD player, they all should have respectable output... just
about any of them should 'suffice'.

Riv content: my audio setup is in the basement, next to the workshop, so I
can listen as a wrench on a Riv.

[RBW] Re: Off topic question: portable cd players

2017-01-16 Thread Bill M.
How small do you really need? Any DVD player will play audio CD's and some
of them are pretty compact. Google says you should be able to pick one up
at Target or Walmart in the $30 range. I'd rather use a player designed
for domestic use than a portable, if only for the remote control.

These days I rip all of my CD's, store the files on a small laptop and
stream them to the stereo via wifi.

Anywho, maybe not as cheap as you like, but if you want something 'nice'

Realistically, what do you want to spend? Define cheap? There are some very
nice CD players still made for those who are 'audiophiles' but feel that
CDs are superior to Vinyl :P

2017-01-15 Thread George Schick
A brief Web-scan indicates that Sony DiscMan's are still available. I've
had one of these for many years now and it's never failed to perform well -
better, in fact, than the big old unit in my hi-fi cabinet for playing
partially damaged discs. Quite a few out there on FleaBay, looks like, too.
