Re: [RBW] Re: Philadelphia Bike Expo 2022

2022-11-13 Thread Roberta
That bike belongs to Jamie Kaplan who bought himself this gift and did it
up right. This picture isn’t as nice as his bike in person— the RBW blue
color of the frame is deeper. The shiny bits are oh so pretty. the back
bag is custom— slightly bigger than their burrito bag.

On top of that, he’s a really nice guy and so many of us got to meet him
and experience the bike in person. And, he does ride it! He’s on IG with
more pics

Leah, you are such a talented writer. I'm always thoroughly entertained

Oh what fun it was. I was there for Saturday only . The hugs and laughs

 Scandalous? Perhaps. Or not.

I asked Will and he cannot get the seat high enough, so biking on
those “sucks the fun out of biking” city bikes hurt his knees with the

2022-10-31 Thread Roberta
You should come! Philly is less than 2 hours and only $35.

I got there early via Amtrak Keystone ( that train does take bikes), saw
the capitol (OMG over the top opulence), the PA museum ( wish I had more
time), walked around downtown and the park. Great coffee at Denim Coffee,
twice. It was a great morning.

How is the riding there, bike path and quiet road type? It might be nice
to come back, finish th PA musesum and have a nice long ride. I’d estimate
it was 10 degrees colder there than Philly.

Re: [RBW] Re: Philadelphia Bike Expo 2022

2022-10-31 Thread Roberta
I'll leave the long narrative to Leah, but I loved meeting everyone.
Besides the group above, I met John S, Jamie from Washington DC who had the
fanciest Clem L ever in the beautiful RBW blue! He even had lugged stem!
(Did anyone take a picture?), a very nice couple (I think her name was
Claudia) from NY who just got a Platy and was looking for ideas to build up
her bike, Rich L (what a treat), and the great guys from Riv, Deb from
Rivet Saddles, Johnny Coast, Chapman. Paul's was there with their
beautiful colorful parts (check out the fuchsia--I think my fav), Keystone
bikes, Simon and Firth, Route Werks (their bag is cool!, just a bit small),
Swift, Nittany Mountain works (I have three of their many-thing bags).

There were seminars, but I only went to one--Pam's where she took out item
after item, explaining the purpose of each one, from her well used Riv
Panniers. Do you remember the scene from the original "Mary Poppins"
taking items from her carpet bag? It was like that-everything but the
kitchen sink, with everything having a good purpose. Ron of Ron's bike
also was there and had a talk.

The numbers for the booths and attendance were much higher this
year--pre-pandemic levels, I understand. Sunday's numbers were probably
half of Saturday's, but still elbow room for everyone even on Saturday.
Food trucks were back (and delicious). The vibe in the air was fantastic.

We went on an early morning ride with Pam on Saturday, thru the park and
then the historical district, and winded our way back to the convention
center by 10-ish. I didn't go, but there was a big afterparty at Keystone
Bikes that I understand was a blast. We were planning an early morning
ride over the Ben Franklin Bridge to NJ on Sunday, but that got cancelled
in the early morning hours. Perhaps we'll plan that next year. A
beautiful 10 mile ride over the Delaware River to the Camden waterfront
(it's nicer than you expect).

I loved the valet parking. Free, safe, and they only ask for donations
that benefit the local bike coop.

Cobra Frame building — Joe has a very sick frame building shop and
manufactures frame building jigs and equipment.

Wahoo / Zwift?? — There was a big display of stationary trainers set up
with virtual reality screens for at-home riding. Not my thing at all, they
clearly spent the most money for the primo spots but a nice reminder that
"Hey, you are at a Bicycle Expo! Witness the future!"

I was with a friend who is not obsessed with bikes so my trip was shorter
than I would have liked.

That’s a lovely ride, small gravel for 5 miles over Forbidden Drive (forbidden
to cars) then MUP to Kelly Drive.

I suggest from Kelly Drive, right turn at Falls Bridge over the Schuylkill,
left at MLK drive then car-free road for next four miles to the Art Museum.
Then have your GPS to the Convention center. John’s ride is also a really
nice 15 miles.

I look forward to seeing you.

[RBW] Re: Philadelphia Bike Expo 2022

2022-10-04 Thread Roberta
That would be wonderful.

Depending on how far you want to ride in the morning, you can get a hotel
on the Schuylkill River Trail and ride that in. It's really wonderful.
The only on-road is 3/4 mile in Manyunk until you get to Kelly Drive and
make a right. From there, best way is to make right at Falls Bridge, left
onto MLK Drive and that will parallel Kelly Drive on the other side of the
Schylkill. Your GPS might keep you on Kelly, but MLK Drive is closed to
car traffic 8a-5pm on weekends. Better than sharing MUP for those last 4
miles. The entire route from Oaks, PA to Philadelphia is quite populated,
so hotels are a-plenty.

Andy C. might have some suggestions for hotels. I think it's in
Conshohocken that there is a hotel (Mariott???) right on the trail. That's
about 20 miles to Phiadlephia. It's about 25 miles to Philadelphia from
the Betzwood Trailhead at Valley forge park. Parking at any of the Septa
lots along the way is free on weekends if you need to drive to a trailhead.

[RBW] Re: Philadelphia Bike Expo 2022

2022-10-04 Thread Rusty Click
I am hoping to make it this year. I will be driving from Pittsburgh and if
I bring my bike along, I'll look for a place a little west, and ride into
and back from the convention center. Would love to meet with some of the
folks on this forum too!

[RBW] Re: Philadelphia Bike Expo 2022

2022-10-04 Thread ascpgh
I trying to get there, bothersome work schedule has me working on both
Friday and Monday around the weekend. I'm aiming for a turnpike motel then
close in for a Saturday night location near the SEPTA for both parking and
an orderly exit for home Sunday.

I now think of this gathering as a "meet your maker" opportunity. Amazing
how after a few conversations you find yourself in the industry, because
you are the focus at this bike expo.

[RBW] Re: Philadelphia Bike Expo 2022

2022-10-03 Thread Roberta
It is so great to greet people in person that we met on the boards. The
last two years that they had it, we met at the lunch area and chatted while
looking over booths. Pam led a 7am Saturday morning ride that was so much
fun, we got together Sunday to do another. I live in Philadelphia. We saw
art, buildings , historic places, nature, Japanese house and garden, the
“Rocky” step, liberty bell.

I met Brian Chapman from Chapman cycles, and Deb from Rivit, and visited
with the Riv guys. All wonderful people. Keystone bikes is hosting s party
Saturday nite. They “get” Riv.

Oh, yeah, there is some bike oriented booths too. :). Two days of
entertainment.

Oh my. In the unlikely event I actually got on a plane and landed all the
way over there I don't think I'd have figured out the logistics to bring a
whole (and rather large) Rivendell with me. I'd just hang out and look at
bikes and stuff, I enjoy that!

Joe, you have to come. Just do it for the weekend. I never get away for these
things either, I hear ya, but I’m forsaking my responsibilities and doing it. I
have to drive all by myself for 10 hours each way, but I’ll find enough coffee
and courage and just do it. Rivendell will be there, too. There will be group
rides in the city and seminars to attend at the convention. Here’s the website:

Now, will you pack your bike in a box like Pam Murray and bring it along? I
think yes.

2022-10-03 Thread Wally Estrella
It's on my calendar, so that means I'm hoping to go. I'm riding the
Appalachian Gravel Grinder the week before, so I have to juggle some PTO
and cat-sitter stuff. My wife has some family in Philly so that's a plus
on me getting down there. It'll probably be an Oct 28th decision...
