It'll certainly be lighter going up Killer Hill! It’s the going down first
that could be interesting...

2020-10-05 Thread Steve Cole
Leah,

Try Simworks if you want aluminum fenders. I have an MIT Atlantis with 700
x 55c Rene Herse Antelope Hill tires. Simworks has a fenders all the way up
to 80 mm wide. Mine are the Flat 65s. They fit only needing a very small
crimp on either side by the fork. Simworks has other sizes as narrow as
35 mm as well as other profiles (Round,Turtle, Fuji and Liner). James at
Analog said that Simworks fenders, which are made by Hong by the way, have
the best attachment hardware. Love your new Platy!

Eamon, I laughed out loud when I read this. My poor Clementine...it’s hard not
to ride the newest, shiniest thing, isn’t it. If the Platypus moves more
lithely uphill, my Clem will REALLY be neglected. But I’m still loyal to it;
it’s a keeper. Raspberry Sparkle though...that’s just got a nice ring to it...藍

As far as I can tell (which is never as far as I think it is), they just
have this stuff up so people can see/read about the frame. They'll announce

Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus: First Look

2020-10-01 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Platypus hasn't been released for sale, yet.

I hope Riv is sper busy with these frames and others that are coming
into their shop. Riv noted that it will no longer take frames out of the
boxes and do their usual prep... only to re-box and send it on the way to
customers. This should make it a lot easier for them, and faster for
customers to receive frames.

(Riv will still do prep if asked... charging for time as they should.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus: First Look

2020-10-01 Thread Mark Roland
I think that would depend on how much your fenders wiggle. But I doubt
anyone on the list would know the answer at the moment. My guess is if it
fit 50mm (not 50c) tires with fenders, and they had tried it a few times,
it would probably say fits 50mm tires with fenders. Or 45 with, 50 and
wiggle room without (so you could probably run 48 or 50mm knobbies?

Having your new model frame secured before the pre-sale goes live, in a
custom color just for you, is a real good sign you're properly Riv-fam.

Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus: First Look

2020-09-30 Thread Joel Stern
Our rough frame delivery timeline

A lot of people have emailed asking what's coming when. Here's a rough
outline of what's coming in the next 7 months or so

   - Sam Hillbornes - around Halloween
   - Platypus frames - November
   - Appaloosas - early next year
   - Clem Ls - March or April
   - Charlie Gallops - sometime around Summer
   - Homers after that
   - Susie/Gus after that

Complete bikes are tricky nowadays; A lot of manufacturers were shut down
in the beginning of the pandemic and we're really feeling that gap in work
now. We have to be more flexible in what parts we pick on the completes and
you'll have to trust us to not pick anything bad. It'll likely get fancier
actually.

Hi Paul, the bikes are not completes, so you’ll get to choose your parts. The
Platypus frames are supposed to arrive in November, or so the last newsletter
said. There is rumored to be more news come this week, when the newsletter and
BLAHG post are released.

I hope we all get one! Let’s clean them out of Platypuses. Platypuses on parade!

The color looks great - the red equivalent of the new HH gold color. I
guess I'll need to wait until tomorrow to find out the production colors.
Are there rack mounts on the top of the fork crown? It looks like there's

Whatever the color is called, I call it *spectacular. *I didn't know it was
possible to be the recent recipient of a Joe Bell painted custom and still
be envious of another color and frame but here I am!

Leah I know this project was a long time coming - I remember talking about
the Anniversary Mixte back when I was young! - and you put a lot of time
and thought into the color. Between you and Grant and the painter and
builder..nailed it! That's a lovely bicycle, I can't wait to see it built
and you flying around on it in your Instagram videos.

You've got some riding to do then. So far, the half-life of a Rivendell is

No, this bike is mine. The production colors will be new colors - I bet you’ll
more know on Thursday.

Are you still with me? Get ready to be delighted! I have wanted a new
Rivendell mixte ever since the rumored Anniversary Mixte of 2018. Will -
who has had too many emails from me about the Anniversary Mixte, which
became the Fancy Cheviot, and ultimately evolved into the Platypus - sent
me an email. And in that email was the most remarkable photo...

It’s Grant, with my new Platypus in his arms. Everything about this photo
is so endearing. The way Grant is proudly presenting the bike, this
long-awaited fancy mixte, named after his favorite animal. The way his
eyes are covered so you can’t read the pride in them but you can see in
his outstretched arms how he hopes you are pleased with his masterpiece.
It’s too much for me. I’m overcome. It is likely to go on my wall...the
 photo, not the bike.

No, the bike will be ridden half to death. I won’t be precious about it,
but I will dress it up fancy. Analog is doing another one of their famous
colorful wheelsets and dyno systems for me, and the accent colors we chose
are rose and teal. (If you only have 2 bikes, you get to splurge on the
builds. See photo for wheel/dyno selection.) Rivendell will do the rest of
the build, and I am really looking forward to this because I haven’t ever
chosen the parts for a complete bike build before. My last *new* Rivendell
was the 2012 Betty Foy, and I didn’t know a thing about bikes then, so I
just requested Keven choose everything. In 2020, I know just enough to
have an opinion and I’m really looking forward to Will’s phone call about
 the parts this week.

The mixtes are the best bikes Rivendell makes, and they have outdone
themselves with this beauty. It’s regal, like a ballroom gown, and made
better because it’s not just a pretty face. It may appear as a
contradiction, because it is exquisite, yes, but not at the expense of
function. It is smart. Capable. Beautiful. Useful. This is the DNA of a
 “joy-bringer.”

I hope this beautiful bike brightens your day a little bit, and stokes
your excitement for Grant’s upcoming, long-awaited and much-celebrated
Rivendell mixte. I wish you all a Platypus this November!

Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus: First Look

2020-09-29 Thread Roberta
That color is the most wonderful color I've seen since your
water/aqua/silvery/blue Clementine bike color, which is now the former best
color ever for a bike color. And, with rose colored rims--ooh, la, la
And, the graceful lines--so sophisticated yet soft looking. If at least
one of the other colors is half as nice as the "it can't be red" color, I
will be first in line for it.
