[RBW] Re: Polishing Frenzy

2009-06-05 Thread John Ferguson

Nothing special. Just a brush and some soapy water; I also remove the
chain every few weeks and degrease it.

Keep in mind I had a lot of time on my hands, I was taking a few days
off from riding because my knee hurt (all better now).

You might also be looking at pictures of the bike when it was brand
new--I took the early pictures after only about 100-200 miles.

[RBW] Re: Polishing Frenzy

2009-05-31 Thread John Ferguson

Do you mean what's my method for keeping my significant other pacified
or my polishing method?

For polishing:

The stem was nickle plated; I removed the plating and had it chrome
plated.

The bars are easy, just Simichrome, polish like you're polishing a
shoe. No need to unwrap if you're careful.

The bell was complicated. Ten minutes in an Easy Off bath to remove
the anodization. Scrub with one of those green pot scrubbing pads
(like very fine steel wool) to remove residual anodization. Polished
with Dremel metal polishing compound, then hand polish with
Simichrome. You could probably skip the Dremel step, it didn't seem to
do much.

2009-05-31 Thread charlie

About the wife's eyes glazing over...just tell her the cost of a
high end steel bicycle, chrome and all, is still around 20% of a stock
Harley Davidson and the cost of upkeep and health benefits far
outweigh the two wheeler with a V-twin! Pretty bike by the way! Love
the chrome and the color reminds me of butterscotch candy. Now you
have to get something for your wife.

Yellow tape, single layer, amber shellac (3 coats when I first put the
tape on, and then 2 coats just before the pictures were taken because
the initial coats were wearing through). It's important to do just
enough and not too much, otherwise the bars become slick.
