[RBW] Re: Recommend all silver triple FD for Bleriot build please.

2014-07-31 Thread Garth
Lunginsam,

FWIW, Shimano's claim about those flat bar derailleurs being for flat
bar shifters is just marketing, otherwise it is false. Flat bar shifters
are mtb shifters in cable pull. You can use it with indexed mtn shifters
and certainly with friction ! The fd- r443 and all road triples are
optimized/marketed for road rings, as opposed to their mtn FD's which are
optimized/marketed for mtb rings. It does not mean either or cannot be
used with say, a 46 big ring. As usual, the proof is in the applying it.
I've read of people using the R443/4503 with as small as 44t big rings , so
as far as I am concerned if you want a nice all silver clamp on FD, that is
good choice. It comes with a 31.8 diameter clamp with a shim for 28.6.

Don't concern yourself with 8 , 9 or 10 speed derailleurs , as you are
friction shifting !

If you order a fd-r443 online, just make sure it is in retail packaging
that includes the shim, the oem's do not . Always ask if in doubt. You can
always order a shim too .

Oh yeah . . . . and I forget the Shimano R453 ! . . . it's on the same
page as the link Tony gave, but you can get it anywhere . The clamp
version uses a shim to reduce 31.8 to 28.6 , but no biggie .

2014-07-30 Thread Dave Johnston
What is your shifter? If you are indexing then you want compatibility.

I am using an old Shimano RX100 Hybrid all silver derailer on my Bleriot
with early XTR 48-36-24 crank and it works great.

My Girlfriend is using the all silver Shimano FD-R443 (designed for flat
bar shifters), on a Sugino triple which looks great but I don't have the
adjusting for perfect shifting from the granny to the middle without an
extra nudge. That bike has MTB rapid fire index shifting so its more
finicky than the bar end shifters I use.

2014-07-30 Thread lungimsam

I am using the SILVER shifters.

I like to friction shift only. So patchwork should be fine as long as:
the derailer take an 8-speed width chain
and the clamp size is right - 28.6
and the derailer can handle 26-36-46 rings
I have a 113bb on the bike.

[RBW] Re: Recommend all silver triple FD for Bleriot build please.

2014-07-29 Thread Garth

If you want a genuine 28.6mm clamp on silver FD, go vintage from ebay .
Check for Suntour or Shimano 28.6 FD's. I've found that even most doubles
can shift triples just fine though , FWIW. The ones with a nice long cage
:) Like : many SunTour's and Shimano's and even Campy's .

But really, if you want a newy new just use a the braze-on and the adapter
as there is no other choice for newy new.

Whatever you do, don't use a Sora triple. On my triple-shifting Rivendells,
more than one Soras of mine have broken, in exactly the same place - the part
of the derailleur body that has a little arm that is supposed to anchor the
spring. The appendage broke off, leaving no possibility for spring tension.
Once would have been a fluke. Twice means inappropriate part for the job.
