[RBW] Re: Rim / Spoke Cracks... Should I be concerned?
Crashing on chip seal really sucks! On a recent club ride here in East Texas someone overlapped wheels on a section of new, smooth asphalt and went down. Before he had even stopped sliding one of the club elders declared "at least it wasn't chip seal!" Angus "you should only be concerned if you consider it bothersome to slide on chip seal at 30 mph in bicycle shorts." Over tensioning spokes is one way to have eyelets crack. I had a rear wheel build by a local shop using Campy Chorus rear hub, Ritchey OCR rear rim and DT db spokes. The wheel had *maybe* 1000 miles on it when I found 2 eyelets cracking. Very disappointing. I'm planning to rebuild with either a Mavic Open Pro, MA2 or a Velocity Aerohead OC rear rim. The other possible way is anodized rim. Jobst stated that rims cracked at the eyelet because of anodizing: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/anodized-rims.html I had my DA rear hub/Mavic Open Pro Blue rear rim crack too. However, that wheel had been in use for over 10 years, probably 20K miles, with no problem until I found the rim cracking around the eyelets. I suspect it was the anodizing that finally caused the crack. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Rim / Spoke Cracks... Should I be concerned?
Hi all- I'm getting two new wheels built up on VO Diagonale 650b rims. I figured I might as well try something new and see if I can get more miles out of them than I did with the Velocitys. Thanks for the advice! Same problem here (pics here http://bit.ly/aAger2 and here http://bit.ly/cp7uyd). In my case it was a stout circa-1998 Mavic touring rim that was straightened after a subtle taco-ing from a 1999 crash. It then went thousands of miles--many self-supported touring--before these cracks showed. The rebuild with Mavic's current bombproof touring rim ran $80 (rim) + $7.50 (spokes) + $45 (labor). Look on the bright side -- aluminum is one of the most recyclable materials. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Rim / Spoke Cracks... Should I be concerned?
I'm not going to disagree that new rims are in order. But I will say that I found a couple similar cracks on my commuter (Velocity/Synergy) in the Fall and I've been riding them all winter with loaded panniers and they're still holding strong. It's on the to do list though... http://www.flickr.com/photos/quadmod/4127209212/ Jay Fichialos On Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 11:26 PM, RoadieRyan wrote: > Rick new rim! you have got to protect Yeduda Moon comic strips' most > valuable asset.YOU > > Seriously ride safe > > On Mar 27, 9:11 pm, CycloFiend wrote: > > on 3/27/10 12:34 PM, Rick Smith at rick_sm...@sulfurstar.com wrote: > > > > > Discovered these while cleaning the Saluki's rims today: > > > > >http://m.flickr.com/?done=1&id=4468086048&magic_cookie=60a853592b9cce. > .. > > > 2dda07f87&title=Spoke+crack&description=#/photos/74396...@n00 > /4468088476/ > > > > >http://m.flickr.com/?done=1&id=4468086048&magic_cookie=60a853592b9cce. > .. > > > 2dda07f87&title=Spoke+crack&description=#/photos/74396...@n00 > /4467312843/ > > > > >http://m.flickr.com/?done=1&id=4468086048&magic_cookie=60a853592b9cce. > .. > > > 2dda07f87&title=Spoke+crack&description=#/photos/74396...@n00 > /4468086048/ > > > > > Is it beausage or time to replace the rims? > > > > Cracks are not beausage. > > > > New rim time. > > > > - Jim > > > > -- > > Jim Edgar > > cyclofi...@earthlink.net > > > > Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries -http://www.cyclofiend.com > > Current Classics - Cross Bikes > > Singlespeed - Working Bikes > > > > Your Photos are needed! -http://www.cyclofiend.com/guidelines > > > > "Steel's what you want for a messenger bike.
