[RBW] Re: Road Bike with 1x10 or 1x11

2017-04-14 Thread Garth
Do a 1x8 or 9 if that's what you're used. More gears is not necessarily
better than less. Being able to spin at different cadences in a given gear
is a great thing . I used to be a shiftaholic, trying to maintain a
certain cadence all the time. Not anymore, I really just don't care to
shift if I don't really have to. But hey, I am still using 6 and 7 speed
freewheels and the times I tried an 8 sp. cassette wheel it felt like one
cog way too many. After using 6 even 7 seems a bit much.

[RBW] Re: Road Bike with 1x10 or 1x11

2017-04-14 Thread JohnS
Hello Chris,

I have a 1x7 on Salsa Casseroll, works great. My advise would be to have
the chain ring align with the center cog. That way the chain deflection is
minimized. Also try to use a chain ring size which would work with the
center cog to give you a comfortable cruising gear. This way you have an
even division of higher and lower gears from it. I'm using a 14-34 cassette
and a 44 chain ring.

Good luck,
JohnS

Hey Patrick! I'm afraid there is nothing epic about my travels. I stick
mainly to bike trails around the Chester County PA area. I do, however,
need to get on the stick about posting photos on this forum. I opened the
google photo storage (whose real name escapes me at the moment). I'd love

It's usually only when i'm on dirt that I start to use that 42t in the

[RBW] Re: Road Bike with 1x10 or 1x11

2017-04-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
I ran my 650B A. Homer Hilsen for a while with a 1x9. 38T narrow wide ring
in front 11-32 cassette. It was plenty. I keep surprising myself how low
of a top gear I can live with. Jan is a much faster rider than me and
asserts he's never been dropped on a descent due to not having a high
enough top gear. His top gear is a 48x14 which is 94 inches. 38x11 on a
27.5 inch wheel is 95 inches. Good enough for Jan, good enough for anybody
who is not a lot faster than Jan, IMO.

I found 38x32 to be low enough for most unloaded on-road climbing. If the
bike was going to be ridden off-road or loaded I would have wanted lower.
I used a friction barcon shifter and a Shimano Deore XT short cage rear
der. RD M751-GS

forgot to mention I found the 40t up front with 11-40 sufficient in DC

is pretty decent.i don't carry much on my commute (change of clothes,
lunch).

also the Pelican has a 107mm or 108mm bottom bracket I believe.

[RBW] Re: Road Bike with 1x10 or 1x11

2017-04-13 Thread Philip Kim
Chris,

I've done the 1x9 on the San Marcos:

1x9 IRD extra wide cassette (12-40)
Shimano 105 crank w/ 38t Wolftooth No-drop chain
Shimano 105 derailleur w/ Wolftooth "Road Link"
Shimano Ultegra bar end shifters in friction

Here's a pic :

I found the 1x9 gearing easy to shift, but the gaps were a bit too much.

So I went with a 1x10 on a Box Dog Pelican before giving it to my girlfriend

1x10 Sunrace Cassette (11-40)
Sugino crankset with Wolftoof 40t no drop chain on the "inside" of the
110bcd arms
Shimano SLX 10 spd rear derailleur
Gevenalle GX - Shifters, I got the short pull version

The Gevenalle shifters use the microshifters that are for 10 speed Shimano
MTB rear derailleurs. Index flawlessly, and have a larger throw so friction
is also easy (YMMV). Very no-fuss set up.

Here's a pic of the BDB Pelican (re-powdered pinkbecause thats what she
likes)
