Thank you for posting! I have been trying to find these to encourage my

Eric, thanks for the link to the interview.

That is a beautiful bike. From the side, this set up looks a lot
like my Hunqapillar with Alba's. I'm hoping a Nitto NP stem will get
 the
Ortho bars down low enough as my saddle is a lot closer to the frame
 than
Uncle Ron's saddle is. If the bars slip in the NP stem slips, I may
 try a 4
 bolt Wendy stem.

Yeah, sorry for any confusion! As of this writing, 13 June 2023, they are
out of stock. But inbound! I know a lot of people were interested so
figured I'd share some vague intel that more are on the way.

Sure to sell out quickly, again. Lots of restock email notifications
subscribed.

That brings me to the mild outcry over the rapid sell through of
Uncle Ron’s Orthopedic Back bar. There is a narrative swirling around
 the
internet that we do this sorta thing on purpose —- if we were only that
smart. This is a short story about a small business with medium
popularity.

I generally prototype new products in my barn. In the case of
these handlebars, i used a nitto bosco as a blank and bent them to
 where i
liked it best. I call up Matt from Crust and convince him to make them
 —
where he generally trusts me with baked in reluctance. Adam Sklar
digitally draws them up for me —- and its off to the best handlebar
 factory
in Taiwan who also happen to make Renthal’s motocross bars. So these
handlebars are gonna take a while to make. In normal times, 3-6 months
 is
normal …. as things sit now, you are lucky to have a turn around under
 18
months.

So there you are with a high performance geriatric handlebar design
wondering how many you should order based on what kind of demand there
 will
be in 18 months… will we even be here??? Fuck! Okay, 90 sounds about
 right.
90 it was. 90 gone in an afternoon. More than 90 on order now…. you
guessed it …. 18 months away. Hope you still want them!

In those Radavist photos, I noticed Uncle Ron has his stem down

 those
 grips.

My intuition is telling me a bullmoose version of these bars with a
170mm quill would fit my Hunqapillar better.

Eric, thanks for the link to the interview.

That is a beautiful bike. From the side, this set up looks a lot like
my Hunqapillar with Alba's. I'm hoping a Nitto NP stem will get the Ortho
bars down low enough as my saddle is a lot closer to the frame than Uncle
Ron's saddle is. If the bars slip in the NP stem slips, I may try a 4 bolt
 Wendy stem.

[RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust

2022-01-22 Thread Eric Marth
For anyone who missed it, Ron's email update included a bit on the
availability, quick sale and re-stock of the back bars:

   -

That brings me to the mild outcry over the rapid sell through of Uncle
Ron’s Orthopedic Back bar. There is a narrative swirling around the
internet that we do this sorta thing on purpose —- if we were only that
smart. This is a short story about a small business with medium
   popularity.

I generally prototype new products in my barn. In the case of these
handlebars, i used a nitto bosco as a blank and bent them to where i liked
it best. I call up Matt from Crust and convince him to make them — where
he generally trusts me with baked in reluctance. Adam Sklar digitally
draws them up for me —- and its off to the best handlebar factory in Taiwan
who also happen to make Renthal’s motocross bars. So these handlebars are
gonna take a while to make. In normal times, 3-6 months is normal …. as
things sit now, you are lucky to have a turn around under 18 months.

So there you are with a high performance geriatric handlebar design
wondering how many you should order based on what kind of demand there will
be in 18 months… will we even be here??? Fuck! Okay, 90 sounds about right.
90 it was. 90 gone in an afternoon. More than 90 on order now…. you
guessed it …. 18 months away. Hope you still want them!

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust

2022-01-16 Thread Austin Moore
I’m hoping the bars come back in stock. Iv had my eye on them for the last
year with all the tease photos in IG. I didn't think they’d sell out in 5
minutes. Ron said in the Radivist comments section on the write up on them
they may have been shorted a little more then half the order. So I have
hope that’s true and they’ll have more in stock soon rather then wait a
year or more for the next order if they do re order. Aside from that they
have a very elegant shape to them.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust

2022-01-09 Thread Richard Rose
I never noticed this Crust bar before. But, since my (first ever) new
conversation seems to be in a holding pattern.., my new to me Clem came with a
65cm wide Tosco bar (similar) with 31.8 clamp size that is simply too wide for
me. I also have the 31.8 FacePlater stem in 135 length - too long for me. These
will both be for sale as soon as I am allowed to post them. New ones are
already on their way from Rivendell.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust

2022-01-06 Thread iamkeith
Thanks. I think I'll try it. As noted, I'm only worried about the finish
cracking if it's anything like brittle chrome. These are fillet brazed,
steel, bullmoose bosco bars. Other than being too high and too narrow, and
too straight-back at the grip, they're a perfect compliment to my fillet
brazed susie, which is why I want to make them work.

Otherwise, I agree with everyone about the custom Doom bars. I used a
different custom bar ("Arise") on my last mountain bike a few years ago,
and I now have steel bars on 5 of my most ridden bikes. I just can't see
any reason to ever use off-the-shelf, aluminum bars again. (At least not
for a big guy like me who always wants wider and stiffer, and for whom a
few grams of weight is not a big deal.) I'm gearing up to get two bars
from Doom, and ironically recommended the idea to someone on the IBOB list
just a few days ago.

FYI, my "pack them full of sand" idea came from Charlie Cunningham. That's
what he did to modify aluminum drop bars into the first dirt-drop bars,
which then inspired Grant to make the first mass-produced dirt-drop bar for
the '87 MB-1. But Charlie could re-heat-treat them after bending, so I
think it's good advice not to bend aluminum myself.

Why not email or call Crust? They have always been responsive to my

be in stock.

As stated above, use a vice sandwiched between 2x6. Steel bar. Do not bend
aluminum bars!
I was waiting for Ron’s bars since the first photo leak. Saw the post here
that they were in stock but couldn’t get to them in time. Oh well hopefully
they will come around again soon!

2022-01-05 Thread Michael Williams
Just a heads up to the group if you missed out on the Crust ortho bars: there
is a fellow who makes all types of handlebars under the moniker DoomBars on
instagram. He does a lot of swoopy albatross style bars. I’ve ordered 2
pairs from him over the last couple years. He’ll do any sweep/ rise/ width.
It’s really actually awesome. He’s really great to work with. They’re made of
steel. Very strong but not too heavy. When I ordered I think they were
either $100 or $120 might have gone up, not sure. If you’re looking for custom
bars they’re hard to beat. -Mike

Concur with Taylor on Crust shipping. I thought their shipping charges were
insane but actual shipping was a lot less and they refunded the difference
after they created the shipping label. You can call/e-mail to verify but
that was my experience the two times I bought from them last year.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust

2022-01-05 Thread Taylor M
I second sending Crust an email.

I suspect whatever algorithm they're using to compute shipping costs
doesn't take into account packing considerations, namely whether an item
adds significant weight to or changes the size of the package. I ordered
the bars + a hat and shipping was a little over $40. I was distracted so I
didn't notice until after the fact, but they processed and shipped my order
quickly and refunded $25 without me saying anything. This also wasn't the
first time Crust has proactively refunded part of my order's shipping cost.

Maybe send Crust an email?

Maybe there's a glitch in their shipping calculator, an extra $16 to ship 2
rolls of Newbaum's seems weird.
