[RBW] Re: Saddle recommendations for old lady butts

2016-08-03 Thread 'pb' via RBW Owners Bunch
I can only speak on behalf of my own butt. I think Specialized is doing really
good work with saddles. I'm pretty sure they cover the full gamut of styles.

As someone else suggested, how often she rides will be a question, as will be
distance and riding position.

For me, Toupe 155 is comfortable and Romin 155 is spectacularly comfortable.

[RBW] Re: Saddle recommendations for old lady butts

2016-08-03 Thread Garth

I'm assuming your mom is referring to her sit bones being sore. First of
all, saddle with gel can't all be lumped into the same category any more
than leather ones or any other type. A gel saddle can be mushy or hard and
everywhere in between. Choosing and recommending saddles for other people
is such a crap shoot, especially if they can't articulate what hurts
where. Also, bike position has everything to do with how much pressure is
on your sit bones, as Peter said the more upright the wider.

That said, I ride Selle Royal Saddles. The ones with Royal Gel. They
are not mushy like really cheap saddles and not hard like a Terry. Their
gel is a great balance of firmness and forgiveness. I gave up cycling for
awhile because all the saddles I used to use no longer worked for me. Sit
bone discomfort off the chart. Everything I ever thought or heard about
saddle and all the theories I found was now vague generalizations and
worthless. So on a whim at REI I tried a Selle Royal Lookin Moderate
saddle, much wider than I had used before and nice flat profile on top.

They make a lot of womens models. I'd look at the Odina, Drifter Plus and
Drifter Medium and Lookin Relaxed if looking for a wide womens model.

Have the rider call Debra at Rivet Cycle Works and chat with her about
options. She has a 2-month demo option, $25 (plus return shipping) of
course applied to the price of the saddle.

Apologies to any and all I have offended for the crass and ignorant post. It
was of course not my intention - only levity. OP has been deleted.

Re: [RBW] Re: Saddle recommendations for old lady butts

2016-08-02 Thread Peter White
If she doesn't ride often, that can easily account for the sore butt. Just
riding more can help a lot. She may just need to get over the rough spot.
As far as what saddle might be best, I can say that in my forty years in
the business, I've had very few women be happy with Brooks saddles, unless
she's riding in a very upright position, like on an old Raleigh three speed.

Terry is a brand that's far more likely to please a lady. The more upright
the riding position, the wider the saddle should be.

Not all "Old Lady butts", are the same. Saddle preference is highly
personal even for older women. All the same parameters are valid, riding
position, length of ride, conditioning to bicycle saddles in general.
Please don't ask the group to make a recommendation based on your "Old Lady
butt" description.
