[RBW] Re: Skyline Drive on 4/23 (Bike Only)

2017-03-07 Thread ascpgh
I'm planning on making the event, some others tentative at this point, but
interested. I've driven on this section a bunch, biked sections south of
I-64. Looks very similar. Beware that services are spaced by vehicular
spans and running out of water can be a problem on a bike.

My Grandmother's sister was married to the head ranger of the Shenandoah
National Park in the 60s and lived in the housing at the park HQ between
Thornton Gap and Luray.

The ride up to Thornton Gap from Luray or Sperryville requires
deliberation. The entrance to Skyline Drive is remote and has no official
parking (except a chance to be ticketed and towed on federal land): Thornton
Gap Entrance, coming from East
.
 Riding
up from either side will be as much a climbing challenge as you'll have all
day on Skyline Drive: 10 miles and 1500' from Luray, 7miles and 1600' from
Sperryville. I think I read that Skyline Drive has 7% max grades.

Front Royal is encouraged in the announcement. I'd think of it as more of a
necessity unless coming form the south. and willing to ride those roads
with the traffic.

That's how the climbs look at RWGPS https://ridewithgps.com/routes/19407396.
Persistent 4% to 7% grades.

In case anyone missed it, registration is required, but it does not
gurantee parking space. see here,

”Ride the Drive” is open to bicycles and other non-motorized vehicles.
Registration opens March 10 and is required but does not guarantee a
parking space. Registration information can be found on the Park website at
www.nps.gov/shen/ride-the-drive.htm

If there are folks in the DC area that are thinking of car pooling please
post in this thread. Front Royal is still about an hour from DC so getting
out there still requires some planning.

Has anyone ridden this route before? I'm curious about which bike would
make the most sense, I've not driven this section of Skyline Drive in quite
awhile. Are there points on in between that would make sense for a
roundtrip etc?

Patrick, i can't find a consolidated list anywhere, but the NPS are doing
this in other places, for example here's one for Crater Lake
Oregon,
https://home.nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/vehicle-free-days-on-east-rim-drive.htm

I'm tentatively planning to give it a shot with a couple of my buddies.
Not sure whether I'll drag the Hunq out, or try something a bit lighter,
given the hills.

Sweet! Anyone know ... is there a listing of similar closures to cars
anywhere?

With abandon,
