[RBW] Re: Slightly OT: Route 66

2018-07-20 Thread masmojo
I watched the Outskirts video a couple days ago; I had mixed feelings about
it.
First of all that was a serious amount of riding, so props to them for riding
100+ miles every day INTO THE WIND!
Which sort of brings me to my next thought, which was why did thy name ride
East to West instead of West to East!? Especially, since most of them landed
in LA to start with! It's pretty common knowledge that prevailing winds are
from the West/Northwest!
They were sponsored by Specialized & Rapha, surely someone there could have
alerted them to this major blunder!?
Lastly, I was annoyed by all the silly people in the comments area, complaining
about them not wearing helmets, even though 80% or more of the ride was in
areas where a helmet would have been of absolutely no use.

Ray, Your post brings back memories of my days in the Boy Scouts. Our
troop was big into the Donner Party and the trail restoration. I'm sure
that we hiked through Emigrant Gap, but I can't remember any particulars.
Sounds like a nice ride. Steve

If you're a trout fisherman on the return drive east, you hit Cottonwood
Campground (San Juan and Simon Canyon), Durango, Conejos, Chama, Brazos,
Costilla, and head south along the Mora.

If you are heading towards Reno from the Bay Area, before you get to Donner
Summit, there is a town called Nyack.
Park there and ride through Emigrant Gap till you get past Sugar Bowl Ski
Resort. A bit further up the road, the view opens up to see Donner Lake.
There’s lots of Granite Boulders to find a place to just sit and take it all
in.
In my humble opinion, it’s well worth it.
It’s where I always stop and have coffee.
It’s a nice ride down to the lake from there but it’s a bit of a climb back up.
You could also park closer to the Ski Resort so it’s less of a ride.
The Squeeze Inn in Truckee is a really good breakfast spot.

Enjoy your trip

If you plan to stay a night or two in Santa Fe then I can recommend the
'rail-trail' that heads south from the historic Santa Fe depot to the town
of Lamy. Mix of paved multi-use path and hardpack dirt.

http://brokenspokesantafe.com/trails/ Lots of other good suggestions on
the link-- Rail Trail description is at the bottom of the page.

Two restaurant suggestions in Santa Fe:
https://fireandhopsgastropub.com/
http://www.lachozasf.com/-- located right on the bike path

Have a great trip!

I have advice in the form of a film that I haven't watched yet. This is a
risky recommendation because some of our list members are extremely
offended by the marketing stylings of Rapha, but here goes:

outskirts

This film appears to be ~82 minutes long. No doubts there will be
something to annoy every sensitivity therein. I like Rapha cycling clothing
and Rapha filmmaking. I wore a wool Rapha Team Sky sweater to work this
morning.
