[RBW] Re: Surly Pugsley for sale
That's a very sensible bike, and super versatile with the second wheelset. It's cool to see a fat bike here! I never realized the chainstays on the Pugsley were that long, that's a great callout. Maybe it makes sense since Surly advertised it as a "fat tire touring bike?" I've got a Wednesday with 135mm (ish) chainstays and 69 HTA which is billed as more of a "trail bike" and it's crazy how nimble it feels for being 40ish pounds. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. My commuter is built on a Karate Monkey-framed frame I chose it for the disc brakes for all-weather, all-season, daily use. I took the rear-opening dropouts' as benign until changing a tube halfway home from work late one cold night. It was below zero that night and those rear-opening drops advanced from benign to Hell-bound and life-threatening as my fine motor skills faded and as the the complexity of getting the wheel past and cogs unknitted from the derailleur and chain prolonged the usually nominal task. I was holding the wheel, pulling the tube out when I realized with my last rational thought that I should have ridden the flat all the way home, but then I became very calm as my hands stopped having feeling and I quit shivering. The Disc Trucker replacement is in the front hall, a nice 52 cm Nitto RM-013 on the way to match my Rambouillet's. Re: [RBW] Re: That Pugsley
Questions for y'all about the Pugsley: 1. Have any of you used it as a single speed? If so, what gearing? I *do* miss my off road singlespeeds. With the Monocog 29er I ran a 63 gear which was just about perfect. With my old Diamond Back 26er (both M and DB ran 60 mm Big Apples in the appropriate BSD) I ran 60, but I think that the better roll-over-it quality of the larger wheels asks for a higher gear. 2. Can anyone post a link to a description of a longer-distance ride, describing how the P fared compared to your typical mtb, 26 or 29? FWIW, I briefly ran a 60 fixed on the DB and, while it was fine on uphills and dirt flats, it was hell on smooth, flat surfaces (the 175s helped make it miserable). Talk about flailing away to no avail -- Sysiphesian, I think is a good qualifying term -- an activity to illustrate the desperate and hopelss meaninglessness of ife. I quickly changed it to a ~65 freewheel with 170s and that turned it into a very sweet all rounder. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: That Pugsley
I'm glad someone else brought this up, because I sure as hell wasn't going to out myself! When the fat bikes came out I thought what a truly ridiculous idea. Since then, I've seen all sorts of cool adventures on youtube (find the guys who fatbiked/kayaked in Alaska!) and have moved to a place where I have access to miles of creekbed with potato sized rocks (everything from fingerlings to bakers). I tried riding my bike with 2.0 tires and couldn't hack it. I'm going to try again with my bike with 2.4s - if that doesn't cut it a Puglsey is on the the shopping list. Re: [RBW] Re: That Pugsley
Since I rarely ride snow, I would now get the *Krampus* (Surly), a 29er+ instead of a Pugs, but they just came out with them recently. Re: [RBW] Re: That Pugsley
All the Surly FBs have rear-facing track ends, which I don't like at all. Only downside of an otherwise very cool bike. Looking at the Salsa Mukluk just because of the drop outs, although it's Al alloy which is not my preference. But yeah, the Krampus looks awesome!
