Had been thinking about that. Unfortunately, the wife has a

Plus, have to learn to tough it out and quit whining about less than
ideal riding conditions. Feel like am turning into more of a wimp as

Re: [RBW] Re: today's ride (alt. title: fenders are good!)

2010-11-21 Thread cyclotourist
If that is what the people want, than that is what they get!

Keep in mind that I live in normally dry, hot and smoggy inland Southern
California. I'm not used to precipitation. That's why today's ride was so
cool for me. I know, I know, just another afternoon in Seattle...

That said, I wear Swobo wool jersies year round. They're perfect _for me_
in the heat of the summer and the chill of the fall and winter (hey, it was
56F today!). A SS jersey is fine for 3/4 of the year. I don't ride when
it's pouring, only drizzling, and that is pretty rare in itself. Today's
ride was a bit more than that, and I wasn't really planning on getting too
wet.

Anywho, pretty simple, I have both the long sleeve and short sleeve wool
T-shirts that Riv sells (sold?) as a base layer, Swobo long sleeve on top.
I also have a really light Descente windbreaker that I put on for the
downhills. Kucharick shorts and either Woolie Warm knee warmers or
Kucharick leg warmers (today). REI short wool socks
http://www.rei.com/product/712774and a Walz cap http://www.walzcaps.com/.
Oh, and Swobo wool gloves.

So long/short of it: wool, wool, and more
woolhttp://www.flickr.com/search/?q=wool%20headw=64942209%40N00.
My jersey was quite saturated wet, but the base layer was nice and dry.
Feet and head were dry as well. If it was really pouring, I would have been
less happy.

So there ya' go, my $.02 worth of wool advice!

@Me: Thanks, enjoy the route. There's a few sections with traffic and
no shoulder but I'm sure you'll manage, just be mindful. This was my
first time riding this route on the weekend and there was way less
traffic than on a weekday.

@HR: I don't know what the true measurement of the tires is. I imagine
less than 40, possibly around 37.5 but I don't know for sure. I
mentioned in some other threads I've been using JBs and Panaracer T-
Serves both of which are fine. These tires feel heavy but not as
dead as I would imagine. They're definitely better for dirt
excursions than the JBs or T-serves. I imagine before summer is over
I'll try some Marathon Supremes in 700x40.

As for clothing, no chaffing. Last summer I toured for 8 days in a
similar kit (MUSA shorts rather than knickers). The longest I've
ridden in this kind of kit was 120 miles last year. It's fine.

I did have a rain jacket with me, a fairly nice Shower's Pass. I don't
know. I'm pretty tired of all rain jackets. All of them flap
excessively in the wind and after a while they all get kind steamy and
uncomfortable. Wool keeps you warm even when it's wet... to a point. I
can't remember what model SP jacket this is but I gotta say, I almost
enjoy my REI budget model jacket better, it's just a lot bulkier. But
you know, if I'm gonna be riding with luggage (Carradice bag) I might
as well bring it instead of the SP.

With the 400k coming up next weekend I felt the need to get out for a
longish ride today. I'm working tomorrow and Monday I'm having dental

yeah, today was really my only chance for an all day ride. Most
importantly I got a hall pass from my wife to go for an all day ride
although, truth be told, she rarely puts the kibosh on my riding.

After the 300k two weeks ago I had a problem with my Berthoud fender

clipless pedals but sometimes it all seems a little more complicated
than it needs to be. At one point I got off my bike to take a picture
and it felt so good to not have to step gingerly for fear of turning
my ankle in my cycling shoes which have a narrow sole. I'm hoping to
do more longer rides in this kit over the summer. We'll see.

As for the route... I took the Springwater Corridor out of Portland to
Boring and then got on back roads for the ride to Eagle Fern Creek
Park and the loop around George. I love that area. The roads quiet for
the most part and rolling. The loop out to George is fantastic. I
didn't get to see Mt Hood as it was heavily overcast in that direction
but I'll do this loop on a clear day later this summer and am sure to
get some epic views. On the way home I stopped in Sellwood for coffee
and treat. I figure the total mileage from my house in N. Portland was
 probably around 70 or 75.

I'm really looking forward to revisiting these roads this summer and
doing some bike camping along the Clackamas River.
