I like Zinn and the Sturmey Archer 1956 shop manual.

It would be cool if RBW put out their own Just Wrench book with Rivbikes
in the illustration pictures. Good for advertising, too!

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for bike repair books?

2014-02-16 Thread George Schick
They shipped a copy of The Bicycle Repair Book by Van der Plas along with
my Riv when I bought it ten years ago. It seems pretty comprehensive
(nothing like the Barnett's, of course), but I've actually rarely used it.
I have found more value on the Web by looking things up in a discussion
forum or especially the massive amount of info that Sheldon Brown managed
to acquire and document electronically over the years. For example, he
specifically the wedge/butt issue with stems you mention in one of his
discussions.

I'd like a book that is thorough enough to *not* leave out safety issues.

For instance: like telling you how to install a stem, but forgetting
to let you know that you need to be careful that the wedge is not in a
butted area on the steerer tube. That sorta thing. I hate when that
 important stuff is left out.

But I don't want a book that is going to scare me into thinking I will die
on my next ride if I don't torque a bolt just right either.

Just something that makes repairs fun, understandable, and safe.

What repair books do you all like?

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for bike repair books?

2014-02-16 Thread George Millwood
I go with Sheldon's website and other forums on the web. The basics can be
acquired in a night class. Here in the land of Oz, the bicycle association
runs some workshops as do some bike shops. What has really elevated my
wrenching to the point where I am now buying a work stand is a gaggle of
nephews/friends/relatives who have bikes that need a little TLC before we
can go for a ride.
It all depends on how you learn. Personally, I need a mentor, lots of
practice and a reference. I can't manage straight from a book and envy
those who can

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for bike repair books?

2014-02-16 Thread Michael

Yes, that is where I saw the stem/butt issue.

I usually check his page after reading up on the repair I am doing in the
books I have. Jim Langley is another one I review, too. They seem to convey
the safety issues while keeping it a fun experience, not an unnecessarily
scary one, to work on your own bike.

I have seen other write ups that neglect important safety issues in certain
repairs/installations, and I think it is a disservice to the home mechanic.
