I like Zinn and the Sturmey Archer 1956 shop manual. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. It would be cool if RBW put out their own Just Wrench book with Rivbikes in the illustration pictures. I use the park too blue book for working on my Rivendell. My go to book is Barnett's Manual. http://bbinstitute.com/the-barnett-manualExpensive but thorough. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for bike repair books?
They shipped a copy of The Bicycle Repair Book by Van der Plas along with my Riv when I bought it ten years ago. It seems pretty comprehensive (nothing like the Barnett's, of course), but I've actually rarely used it. I have found more value on the Web by looking things up in a discussion forum or especially the massive amount of info that Sheldon Brown managed to acquire and document electronically over the years. For example, he specifically the wedge/butt issue with stems you mention in one of his discussions. For instance: like telling you how to install a stem, but forgetting to let you know that you need to be careful that the wedge is not in a butted area on the steerer tube. That sorta thing. I hate when that important stuff is left out. But I don't want a book that is going to scare me into thinking I will die on my next ride if I don't torque a bolt just right either. Just something that makes repairs fun, understandable, and safe. I go with Sheldon's website and other forums on the web. The basics can be acquired in a night class. Here in the land of Oz, the bicycle association runs some workshops as do some bike shops. What has really elevated my wrenching to the point where I am now buying a work stand is a gaggle of nephews/friends/relatives who have bikes that need a little TLC before we can go for a ride. It all depends on how you learn. Personally, I need a mentor, lots of practice and a reference. I can't manage straight from a book and envy those who can -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Yes, that is where I saw the stem/butt issue. I usually check his page after reading up on the repair I am doing in the books I have. Jim Langley is another one I review, too. They seem to convey the safety issues while keeping it a fun experience, not an unnecessarily scary one, to work on your own bike. I have seen other write ups that neglect important safety issues in certain repairs/installations, and I think it is a disservice to the home mechanic. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Besides Lennard Zinn's book which I keep in the shop I rely on Park Tool's how to page http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help On Sunday, February 16, 2014 4:51:32 PM UTC-7, Michael wrote: Yes, that is where I saw the stem/butt issue.
