[RBW] Re: cork-grip removal
I'll add to installation tips. I don't glue my grips on. I use a strip of cloth handlebar tape on the bar, then put the grip on over it, carefully getting it snugly on. I've never had any issues with grips slipping or moving, and they can be removed carefully if needed and re-installed. http://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2012/06/more-arts-and-crafts-shellaced-cork.html David On Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 1:35:58 PM UTC-6, Shawn Granton wrote: > > I'm not going to add any tips to removal, but if you are going to install > them: You just need a little Gorilla Glue. I'm not going to add any tips to removal, but if you are going to install them: You just need a little Gorilla Glue. If you keep it on the lighter side, you can remove them without drastic measures. I appreciate your appreciation - one more cool part - when I fired up the second cork grip, the smoke started billowing out the open hole on the other side of the handlebar. I've never had a handlebar smokestack. When the wife and kids got home, they kept asking what that funny smell was. I just left it alone. My first thought was “FIRE!” I’m so glad that Kai suggested it and you did it. Brave and funny. If you DM me your address, I’ll send you a free Biketinkers Union patch. Nice work. See, now this kind of winter activity makes so much more sense than entertaining thoughts of bike trainers. *Chapeau!* On Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 8:15:31 AM UTC-8, Jim S. wrote: > > Hi all, thanks for the responses. hahaha!!! I may need to do the same thing soon. I'm definitely going for this method (but maybe scooting my other cockpit stuff away from the grips first). Hi all, thanks for the responses. So I went with the fire technique, because it seemed the most interesting. I dumped some mineral spirits on the grip, and then lit it up. Holy dynamite, that turned into a rip-roaring fire in a hurry. I should have taken a picture, but I was a bit concerned about burning the house down. Epilogue; the grip is removed. The shifter is a bit melted, but functional. On Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 8:55:04 PM UTC-6, Jim S. wrote: > > Hi all, any tips? I'm trying to remove cork grips, and it's not going > well. I scraped them off with a machete. A hatchet or 1" wood chisel and a rubber mallet would work too. On Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 9:55:04 PM UTC-5, Jim S. wrote: > > Hi all, any tips? If they are held on with an adhesive (and they often are) they have to be destructively removed. On Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 9:55:04 PM UTC-5, Jim S. wrote: > > Hi all, any tips?
