[RBW] Re: dyno rear light?

2015-02-06 Thread William deRosset
Need a permanent rear dyno light That works for a luxo front with usb
dealie.

Dear Manny,

For a rear wired light, the only really robust solution for hard use is
internal wiring runs in my experience. That requires either a frame set up
for it already, or modification of your existing frame.

Are you willing to get a braze-on added? If so, the Compass Cycles
repackaging of the B+M Seculite on a seat-tube braze-on is pretty
well-protected and durable once you get the seat-tube braze-on and a down
tube wire reinforcement added. The wire runs internally through the bb and
up the seattube. You'll have to cut your seatpost to length. You may need
to fidget with the grounding wire (run coax vs the light as delivered,
which grounds to the frame), as the Luxos U requires a dedicated ground
wire and ground isolation from the frame.

Modify your frame to run an internal wire down the downtube anyway if you
decide to run power to the back of the bike. The minimum is a second 5mm
drain hole and a reinforced hole at the down-tube/head-tube area.

If your frame is lugged, then you can just drill a hole in the
downtube/head tube lug. I'd make it just big enough to clear your (coax)
wire + a bit of heat-shrink tubing for reinforcement.

Carefully deburr the downtube hole--it is a high-stress area (hence the
reinforcement). If you're running a wire to a rack, then consider a run to
the non-drive chainstay, an exit through the rear-most vent hole, and
drilling your rear rack for the wire.

If you're using fenders, a B+M Secula with the coax wire glued/taped in the
gutter and a wire exit through the bottom bracket weep hole.

A Toplight if you've got a rear rack (a tubus fly is light). Drill the
rack for internal wiring so you don't snag the wires and run the wire
through the non-drive chainstay.

Otherwise? well, anything mounted to a cantilever boss is going to get
whacked with hard use. Even the back of the fender location tends to get
pushed around in ordinary use, though the lights are generally robust
enough that they're not going to die easily.

Other solutions are going to be less well-protected.

Or just run two seatstay-mounted battery lights. The Cateye tl-au100 (BS)
or (G) is reasonably robust, is actually weatherproof when installed
correctly, includes a rear reflector, and runs on AA batteries. Get the
seatstay-specific mounting brackets for your size seatstay from Peter White
or Bike 24 or wherever you find the light.

Buy a couple of spares for when you whack them--they're not expensive, and
probably cheaper than the paint work after you add braze-ons to your frame
for internal wiring.

Cheers,

Will

and/or rear light would be greatly appreciated.

Pixeo is great if your have fenders, or you could mount a SON tail light on
the seatpost under the bag.

Lynne, I drilled out the hole and use a regular bolt with washer. It's
perfectly fine.

My winter project bike will include the new Secula Plus on the right seat
stay (first light pictured). Have not taken it on the road yet, but it
appears to be a nice little tail light.

Yo Manny, what about mounting a light on the seat stay eyelet? You would
have to run a wire along the frame, which is a hassle. Seems like the only
way, aside from drilling and running it internally.

Silly question; why not a front hub dyno? (Admittedly I'm amassing too
many nice unused front hubs that I have otherwise replaced with dyno hubs,
which is a shame... hoping for an alternative one day)... but in the mean
time, is not the front hub setup simply too good to not consider???
