John
Thanks for the additional assessment. I appreciate the convenience of
having two sets of brakes on my Saluki drops. But I only miss them on the
Boscos during those couple of minutes when I'm tucked and screaming
downhilll at 30 plus miles an hour and don't really want to stop! I still
toy with the idea of drops on a mountain bike, but there are many things to
like about those Bosco bars. Just thinking the other day how much more
convenient the thumb shifters are on the Betty Foy's Boscos (I really like
the barcons on the Saluki drops, but i have to get my whole arm involved I
shifting, while that cheapo suntour bosco/thumb shifter moves with a twitch
of the finger)

[RBW] Re: final test: help size up a hunq

2014-09-11 Thread Takashi
Hi Bill,

As I've mentioned, I have 54cm Hunq, my PBH is 85cm, and I am 175cm tall.
Saddle height (center of BB to top of saddle) is 75cm.

Picture of my Hunq with Noodle and Dirt Drop 8cm stem:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/8096995569/
The stem has an effect horizontal extension of 6 or 7 centimeters, and I
feel comfortable with them.
At first I had Dirt Drop 10cm stem; it made me feel a bit too stretched.

I like handlebar to be high, which makes stem stick out pretty high, which
in my opinion is not very cool-looking.
I could have gone for 58cm frame, but then handlebar would have been too
far away.
Maybe you can find a stem with even shorter extension (5cm), but currently
there is no such stem in Riv website.

Bosco-bar with 13cm-extension stem:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/14771364047/
I like to ride bolt upright when on Bosco- or Alba- equipped bike, so again
stem is sticking out high.

Bullmoose:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/8690416089/
You can set this bar pretty high without showing much stem.

I ride mostly on paved roads, sometimes unpaved roads.
There are not many rideable trails around here (in Japan, trail usually
means something like this
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/8740525489/in/photostream/, or
something even worse), so I don't have have many chances to ride on trails.

Anyway, you can ride wherever you like on your Hunq with whichever
handlebar you have.
When I found rideable trail on my way, both Bullmoose and Albatross bars
worked fine.

Good luck!
Takashi

[RBW] Re: final test: help size up a hunq

2014-09-09 Thread shawn m.
I ride a 54cm Hunqapillar and I've run both Albatross and Boscos on it, and
it's shod with (45? 50?) Schwalbe Marathon Supremes which are durable,
flat-free in 2500 miles (it's only real benefit, really). I'm 5'9 with a
PBH of 84. I use it as a all-weather, go-almost-anywhere, day/night,
everything bike. I tour on it, I commute on it, I errandonneur on it, I
ride to coffee on it (all. the. time.). It is stable, comfortable and fun
whether I'm riding 1 mile or 100 miles. I've done a little gravel and
double-track riding on it, but I run fenders and live in the city, so not a
whole lot of that. As a frame of reference (yuk, yuk), my last bike was a
56cm Hillborne. The top tube length is almost the same, but I get much
better stand-over on the Hunq. With a shorter stem, I wouldn't hesitate to
put drop bars on it (but those are going on the Atlantis). Interestingly,
the frame pump that fit the Hillborne perfectly is too small for my Hunq
(and too big for the Atlantis I'm building up). That might be a
non-sequitur, maybe not.

Gratuitous Bosco pic: https://flic.kr/p/gVzuHm
Gratuitous Albatross pic: https://flic.kr/p/ddc4tM

After a season on the Boscos, I'm probably going back to the Albatross
bars; they just feel better to me. You won't regret your Hunqapillar. Good
luck!

[RBW] Re: final test: help size up a hunq

2014-09-09 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Bill,
Does 26er or 29er matter to you? That might persuade you to go one way or
the other.

My PBH is a smidge under 81cm (~170cm tall or 5'7), and Riv recommends 48
or 51 for me. I went with 48cm-- plenty of stand-over clearance, which was
important to me for off-road riding. Also, I wanted to run drop bars and/or
moustache, so I went with the 48 for the shorter top tube (54.5 vs 57.5).
(Works fine for me with ~10-cm stem for drops. I didn't want to use a
stubby stem for drops.)

I've tried albatross, too, and they're fine with a 12-cm stem. I probably
need a slightly longer stem to improve the position. I also have bullmoose
(not the bosco), and those are great for the trail. As is, I sometimes wish
I could get them a little lower. Maybe that's something to consider if
you're choosing between 51 or 54?

Good luck,
Shoji

[RBW] Re: final test: help size up a hunq

2014-09-09 Thread 'Jack' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have a 54cm Hunq. My PBH is 84cm, and I am just shy of 5' 10. The
stand-over on the Hung was a little tight with 2.1 tires, but okay with
38mm Little Big Bens.
I have mustache bars on an 80mm dirt drop stem. The bike is very
comfortable, although initially I had some concern that the top tube might
be too long. I've on had it for two months and have just been riding it
around town, but tomorrow I'm doing a 30+ mile ride on a rail trail which
is more like what it is made for.

I'm in my mid-60s and not as limber as I used to be. I like a relatively
short TT and short stem extension. YMMV.

Sounds like you might be in that frustrating place between a 51 and a 54cm
Hunq. I bought my bike used and didn't an option to get a 51, but the 54 is
working okay for me.

For reference, I ride a 57cm Bleriot, a 56cm Atlantis (26 wheels) and a
58cm Rambouillet. I have thousands of miles on those bikes and they all
seem to fit me.
