Phil, the Dismal Swamp Trail is a great ride. Downtown Norfolk has been re-vitalized with a consequent growth in traffic. Significant strides (protected bike lanes) have been made in Ghent. I loved growing up in Virginia Beach. I used to ride along the Dismal Swamp Trail, right along route 17, into South Mills, North Carolina and ride back. When I would come home for breaks during college, my friends and I would meet at the Dairy Queen in Ghent at night, and ride around downtown Norfolk, which would be completely deserted. Seems to be more restaurants and night life, and more busy these days though, I also liked riding along First Landing Park. Around here, we know spring is coming because the winds pick up -- 21 mph headwind for half my trip yesterday, a big, square "U" -- N>E>S and back again -- as I took the long way to Fat Tire. If we're lucky, the winds will blow from late Feb through part of April and then calm to the usual breezy southwesterlies. But it does look as if it is warming up, and we should see the fruit trees blooming in a couple of weeks -- once again!
