I don't know if this will work with your Apaloosa, but I very often carry a
bike by grasping the seat tube below the bottle cage, and holding the bike
at shoulder height, elbow bent, weight borne by hand at shoulder, with
front wheel down. The handlebars do interfere with legs a bit, but not
badly.

Otherwise, I agree with David that tubing over the cable is a good
solution. Or simply slip a cloth between cable and top tube while you're
carrying the bike. I carry a back-pocket bandana when riding for all sorts
of frequent and occasional uses, facial, respiratory, COVID, cleanup, and
portage.
