Re: [RBW] WTB: 59 Susie frameset

2024-09-24 Thread Teague Scott
First off, I want to thank y'all for reaching out/chiming in here or
directly. *Garth*, I've had a couple leads on Susies come in already,
thanks for the offer.

I've had some phone chats with a couple potential 59cm fillet sellers
(always great connecting with folks from the bunch that way) who reckon I'd
get away with using the Susie for my purposes. That said, *Brendonoid &
Keith*, you've both had me going down the RBW list wormhole - found the
frame failure post & a number of threads documenting loaded down Susies and
general ride quality.

Sounds like regardless of my slender build (6'3", 175lbs soaking wet) the
Susie will be a bit wiggly loaded down. To date I've been doing most of my
bikepacking on a 64cm Black Mountain monstercross. I wouldn't say that
frame is well suited for massive loads either and it has taught me a lot
about paring down my kit for a lighter ride, a habit I'd carry over to a
fatter tired bike like the Suz. Also, the "rough-stuff" I intend on riding
isn't a bunch of singletrack like you'd find in Salmon, ID. I'm more into
forest service roads (sometimes a bit bumpy/pretty washboarded) with the
occasional short, speedy descent down rutted out sections. Probably not
going to do something like the Smoke and Fire race on a Susie. Or ever.

*Keith, *I may have met your buddy while hiking a trail out Salmon ways a
few years back. I bumped into a crew doing trail maintenance - one or two
guys on motorcycles, one on horseback, and a couple on foot. They were
getting way out there with all the gear. Pretty impressive! *Brendonoid, *I
commented on one of your reddit threads recently. Your setup is similar to
what I'd be rocking. Sounds like you're not the happiest with the way that
setup rides?

Seems a lugged Susie might be best for my purposes, but not crossing
fingers many of those are going to hit the used market too soon.

Fillet brazed 59cm owner here chiming in to say it isn't a great choice for
tough bike-packing bike. Light loads will make the frame notably flex.
You'll want a Gus Boots or one of the new lugged ones.
The new lugged ones have thicker tubes but most importantly top tubes
connect higher up on the seat tube greatly improving frame triangulation

Re: [RBW] WTB: 59 Susie frameset

2024-09-23 Thread Garth
I have a 59 Susie that I'd like to sell Teague. It's from the original 2019
batch, burnt orange and fillet brazed. It's brand new and in the box, with
protective wrap still on it. I have it all well packed , so only have a few
photos of it in the box. You can contact me offlist if you're still looking
about details. I'm not tethered to electronic media, so don't expect prompt
replies, at most the next day.

(If anyone else is reading this is interested, unless you've been here on
this list with a participatory history, I'm not interested.)

Re: [RBW] WTB: 59 Susie frameset

2024-09-22 Thread iamkeith

Being a Susie owner, AND being familiar with Idaho rough-stuff bikepacking
conditions*, AND considering your size, I'd suggest focussing your search
toward finding a Gus Boots-Willsen. It will hold up better.

In case you're not completely familiar, the Gus is the original version of
the hillibike and was all fillet brazed. It had larger diameter tubing and
a 1 1/8 threadless headset. The Susie was originally intended as a
lightweight version of Gus, for lightweight people who would NOT use it for
heavily loaded or rough riding. In the final iteration, the two versions
were sort of merged into the Susie. This is the partly-lugged version. I
think it had the smaller diameter tubing, but slightly more stout than the
original Susie. It also had some VERY subtle geometry refinements - though
not necessarily conducive to loaded, backcountry bike packing.

This all happened because the original lightweight Susies were holding up
better than expected, under heavier riders than originally expected. But
that's probably because people weren't riding them as hard as anticipated,
either. (I'm a prime example - large, but baby the bike. ) When pushed to
the limits however, there WERE examples of the Susie frame failing.
There's a pretty good discussion of one such case, here in the forum posts,
from a member who had been doing a cross-country tour, if you look hard
enough.

(*I'm from closely-neighboring part of Wyoming, at one time also from
closely-neighboring parts of Montana. One of my oldest, closest friends,

[RBW] WTB: 59 Susie frameset

2024-09-21 Thread Teague Scott

Sitting here, still nursing a broken heart after missing out on Bones'
Susie a couple of weeks back. Joined the group some years ago but have held
out on getting a Riv ($$$; been rocking the Riv-adjacent). I thought this
might be the one! Was emailing back and forth, deep in contemplation, and
just before I decided to go for it another Riv-nut with their mind made up
and ready to go snapped the beauty up.

So, here I am on the hunt for a 59cm Susie frameset. I'm hesitant to drop
the big bucks on a pristine frame that’ll serve as a rough-stuff Idaho
bikepacking rig, so some beausage is OK especially if it means forking out
a little less. Gold or green (or any other color if there ever was one),
either is fine. Fillet would be preferable but down for whatever.

Let me know if you've got a big Susie you’re considering moving along!

Thanks,

Teague

[RBW] WTB: 50cm Platypus

2024-09-13 Thread Keith P.
I am usually lothe to make such requests on The Bunch, but my fears that
the new batch of Platypus would have downtube bosses was confirmed today,
and I thought maybe there might be sweet-baby small boy in someone's
garage, that was in need of relocation.

The added downtube bosses are a small thing that I could probably live
with, but I'll never use them, and ya know... the small things are big
things.

Anyway, I am looking for 50cm Platypus preferably in Mermaid or Sergio
Green... something like that. (Birthday surprise for the missus)

Please DM me if you have a line on a loose one.
Thank you!

A couple people have reached out and are checking on size and finding their
spare tires. If I could find Billy bunkers for $20 each, I would just do that,
but the closest I can find is $29 each plus $15 shipping on Schwabe itself.

Hopefully someone in the Bay Area will see this and have a couple 26 inch tires
to spare, still looking and will update if that changes.

[RBW] WTB Nitto, VO, or smaller Soma front rack

2024-09-11 Thread Caroline Golum
I know I just missed a FS post for a Nitto front rack and I'm kicking
myself! I've got a Soma Lucas 3 on my bike now, but am looking for
something smaller. Ideally Nitto, VO, or the Soma Champs-Elysees. Using
sidepull breaks and 650B wheels if that helps any.

That just might work.
What price are you asking and any chance you’re local to the SF Bay Area so I
could pick up?

A couple people have reached out and are checking on size and finding their
spare tires. If I could find Billy bunkers for $20 each, I would just do that,
but the closest I can find is $29 each plus $15 shipping on Schwabe itself.

Hopefully someone in the Bay Area will see this and have a couple 26 inch tires
to spare, still looking and will update if that changes.

Re: [RBW] WTB: 26” tires about 2.0” to 2.2” - mildly knobbie

2024-09-09 Thread Nick Lindsey
Consider Continental’s “Double Fighter”. 1.9” with a bit of knobs, but so
comfortable on both asphalt & dry dirt. Reasonable price too, in the $28.00
each range.

[RBW] WTB: 700x32-33 tires

2024-09-06 Thread Paul Richardson
hi

i'd like to try out a different set of tires on my rambouillet. i've had
(and been very pleased with) the rene herse 32s. i'd potentially like to
try something with a bit more grip. some i'm eyeing now are the challenge
strada bianca, ultradynamico, and of course the ol' standby gravelkings.

if you have a pair in lightly used shape that you'd like to move along, or
otherwise have thoughts about another tire that might pair well with a
rambouillet that is mostly on the road but winds up riding
everywhere...please send me a note!

thanks

[RBW] WTB: Silver 2 Shifters, Silver Crankset, Front Rack, Wald Basket

2024-08-30 Thread Aaron Mermelstein
Hello!

I just ordered an Appaloosa frame an I'm very excited to start my build.
I'm looking for some used parts in order to keep costs down. Currently
looking for:

-Silver 2 shifters and thumb mounts (will buy separately if needed!)

-Silver Crankset, 170 preferred (172 may be acceptable) I'm interested in a
2X with a chain guard, but care more about the cranks as the rings can be
changed later.

-Front rack, RBW51 ideally, but open to a Mark's Rack or any other
functional and handsome front rack.

-Medium Wald basket

Please let me know if you have any parts listed that you are looking to
sell!

Thanks,
-Aaron (Sf Bay Area)

[RBW] wtb: xt m737 rear hub, silver v-brake flat bar levers

2024-07-29 Thread Brent Knepper
hiya everyone, on the hunt for some parts for my periwinkle Sam build-

some things up I guess?? if you have what I'm looking for, please respond

so I'm looking for one (1) shimano XT m737 rear hub in 32h, because I would
like a silver hub to build into a 32h rim I have, and like quiet shimano
freehubs and chonky dust seals. all the m737 hubs on ebay are located in
eastern europe, which like kudos to them but maybe I can find one closer
here?

I'm also looking for silver v-brake/long pull/linear pull levers for a 22.2

[RBW] WTB: Handlebar

2024-07-26 Thread Edwin W
Good Riv folks,

I am looking for a swept back bar for an upcoming build. I was thinking
something between a MAP Ahearne

 (less
sweep back) and a Riv Choco

 (almost
all the way swept back)... I know they are quite different, but I would be
open to seeing what people have lying around.

Thanks,
Edwin

[RBW] WTB Susie Longbolts 56

2024-07-26 Thread z b
Hey all
New here. I'm looking for a Susie frame set in 56 cm or 59 cm.
Or possibly a 59cm Clem L. But I'd prefer the Susie.
I'm in need of a more upright bike due to an injury. Appreciate any leads.
Thanks!

[RBW] WTB: 54cm Appaloosa or the like

2024-07-18 Thread Stephen Merelman
Several months ago, I bought a used Clem in Queens. I had planned to strip
the wheels and parts and put them on a different Riv frame

Naturally, the Clem utterly won me over by the time I made it to Penn
Station to haul it back to New Jersey.

I wound up buying *new* wheels and parts, and I still need a frame.

I'm planning to use the new bike for some touring and general rambling up
to centuries. I was thinking Appaloosa, but open to other suggestions. If
nothing materializes, I will buy a new Appaloosa when they come around
later this summer, but if anyone has something they might part with in the
meantime, let me know.

Hello all! Just wondering if anyone has a current geo version of the Clem
frameset that they are looking to move along? I could probably fit a 64 as
well but not sure I’d be able to use a Weehoo under the slammed seatpost. I
have a 90.5 PBH so I know I can fit the 64, just not sure about the trailer!

Thank you in advance!

[RBW] WTB: 58cm top tube road-ish/all-rounder frameset

2024-07-04 Thread Kirke Campbell
Looking for a frameset with around a 58cm top tube (effective).

Preferably steel, lugged/fillet brazed
Clearance for 38-42mm tires, bigger could be fine too
Gently sloping top tube a plus
No disc brakes!

Will be built up as a relaxed road/all-rounder. A Rivendell or something
Riv-ish would be perfect. Let me know what you have!

Thanks,

[RBW] WTB: 54-56 Sam Hillborne (i think? my first riv!) but open to other Rivs

2024-07-01 Thread Jacob Yosowitz
I have admired Rivendell bikes since I first saw a homer parked outside of
my local food co op a few years back, set up with nitto albastache bars and
I thought what is THAT?! I was enthralled by the lugs, the thin steel road
like frame rocking fat tires, and the bars. love at first sight!

My current collection includes a lovely purple waterford road bike i
inherited from my grandpa, he had great taste. I love zipping around on
that no frills frame. And a '85 schwinn high sierra set up as a commuter. I
purchased it for touring but find it a bit unstable and wonky geometry for
long rides.

I'm ready to bite the bullet and purchase a rivendell. I think id be happy
on a Sam, I want something with a bit of zip, but still able to load up for
tours and exploration. I'm only 150lbs so i feel like i could get away with
a Sam for touring as opposed to one of the heavier more dedicated touring
models. Would love any input.

My pbh is 86 and I live in Maine right now, but willing to drive some
distance for the right bike. I'll be in chicago in mid july as well
visiting family, so can set something up there too.
Side note: I absolutely love the orange colorway on sam frames, thats my
dream bike! if you have one and are willing to part with it, you'd make me
a happy camper.

Look forward to hearing from you all!

Undercover Cop Never Knew Selling Drugs Was Such Hard Work
PublishedMarch 5, 2003

PHILADELPHIA—Rick Bastone, 31, an officer with Philadelphia's 23rd
Precinct, has gained newfound respect for America's hard-working drug
dealers ever since going undercover to sell narcotics.

"I had no idea how tough this was," said Bastone, standing on a dilapidated
corner in 20-degree weather while awaiting a cocaine drop-off Monday. "I
guess I imagined it being like in the movies: drinking champagne,
hot-tubbing with honeys, and cruising in customized Escalades while
watching the cash roll in. But here I am, freezing my ass off. I've got to
say, these drug-dealing scumbags really earn their pay."

[RBW] WTB SCAMMER ALERT - gran09...@gmail.com

2024-06-06 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Just a heads-up that if someone reaches out to you from the account -
gran09...@gmail.com, they are not an active list member.

They have directly contacted a couple of group members who posted a WTB
request and exhibited fairly hinky behavior regarding location, etc.

I have the group settings to restrict contact information to only group
members, so they either have a "listening post" email account so they can
harvest contact info, or folks are sharing their contact info in the body
of the post.

The body of your post is publicly viewable.

If you are logged in and viewing the list, you should be able to search for
the email of anyone who contacts you. If someone tries to sell you
something of reasonable value but they have no footprint in this group,
that should be a huge red flag.

[RBW] wtb: 26.8 seatpost, 120-130mm quill stem

2024-05-16 Thread Brent Knepper
looks like I've a periwinkle build coming up in the near future, which I
should be able to get rollin with my small but intentional parts bin :) in
need of a seatpost and stem though!

26.8 seatpost needs:
-longer than 250mm
-15-20mm traditional setback is great, not looking for straight or waybakk
-weird/funky/vintage/esoteric always encouraged, I can get a $5 used kalloy
locally :)

120-30mm stem needs:
-120-130 length only, already have some shorter stems if I don't really
need a long-o
-usual 22.2 quill
-90º or 7-shape, not lookin for a riser stem
-150-250mm quill length is fine, don't need to get the bars high or slammed
-25.4 clamp or faceplate is good, or 26.0 but only with a faceplate is also
good (prolly using rons ortho bars for anyone curious)
-W.F.V.E. also welcomed here

thanks for your consideration!

[RBW] WTB: 50 cm Roadini

2024-05-13 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I am looking to try out a RivRoad bike and specifically, a 50 cm Roadini.

a forever bike…it’s an experiment. But we’ll see.

If you have one for sale, or if you see one for sale, would you help your

Thanks always!

[RBW] WTB old riv frame for a 5'7" rider

2024-05-07 Thread Noah Swartz
My friend had a beautiful Bleriot that I helped them get as their first
wide tire bike. Last week they lent it to a friend to go for a ride, and
that friend promptly crashed it into a curb and buckled the frame. I'll
spare you the gory pics, but the bike is totaled.
They're sad, and I'm sad, and they don't have a lot of money to just buy a
new bike. I'd love to help them find a new frame to swap the parts over to,
and finding another old riv frame would definitely bring a smile to both of
our faces. I believe the frame was the 53 Bleriot, but I'm not 100% sure,
and it's a little hard to measure in its current state. Regardless they are
5'7".
So if you have or see for sale a similar riv frame, please do get in touch.
I'm thinking anything with a single straight top tube, shorter chainstays,
650b wheels with rim brakes, etc. Maybe an old Atlantis, Sam, Saluki, or
Hunq?
Looking forward to your thoughts and insights,
Noah

Long shot WTB post.

Anyone happen to have a 58cm Toyo Atlantis or Saluki that they are ready to

Happy to pay for shipping if necessary.

If someone has one of these frames but wants to try something new, I have a

Otherwise, will pay in full for either frame.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] WTB/ Rear Rack Advice

2024-05-03 Thread Nick Payne
I recently bought my wife a Tailfin rack plus panniers and rack top bag as
a birthday present. Both the rack and panniers are very nicely made and
very stable in use, but decidedly not cheap. I bought her the aluminium
version of the rack, as I couldn't see the point in spending a wad of extra
cash on the CF version to save 150g when you then hang 15 or 20kg of
luggage on it. The rack can either mount to standard rack mounts or mounts
to a special QR or thru-axle they provide if the frame doesn't have mount
points or the mount points are already being used for mudguards. I bought
both the QR and thru-axle mounts, as she has bikes with both axle systems.
With the rack mounting to their axles, it's a matter of about a minute to
transfer the rack between bikes.

Re: [RBW] WTB/ Rear Rack Advice

2024-05-03 Thread Patrick Moore
Until I started getting customs made I always chose the Tubus Fly (it comes
in ss and titanium as well as in black powdercoat) because (1) it is rated
for 20 kg, (2) is it minimalist and very light (sub 15 grams, about the
weight of the chromo Matthews custom on the RBFD), and it fits frames
without chainstay braze ons (uses a bracket that bolts to the brake pivot
bolt or to a bolt through the b-p-b hole in the brake bridge).

I've carried many 40 lb loads and up to ~50 lb on many Fys on flexy 531 and
alum frames with no problems, tho' short shopping trips and not global
tours on bad dirt roads. For that I'd choose the Tubus Cargo Evo rack,
which I also once used, only for my purposes it was grossly overbuilt.
Rated to 26 kg but *tested* to 40 kg -- I'll let others parse the
difference. Or perhas the Cargo Classic? I think Tubus have down-rated
their racks by a few kg since I last bought one.

The Ultima Thule and Ne Plus Ultra and entirely Sic Itur Ad Astra rack of
all of them bar none at all is the Tubus Airy that is made of shiny
titanium, weighs 360 grams, and is mfr rated to 26 kg; I think the
*deustche* means, "tested to 30 kg."

   - 26 kg | 57.3 lbs (getestet mit 30 kg*)

$375 on everyone's favorite, vendor-squeezing, discount retail platform.

If my "road bike for errands" were 700C I'd be sorely tempted, but in fact
it uses 559 wheels and sports a stainless steel Fly shortened by a frame
builder.

[RBW] WTB: 700c wheelset (135mm rear) for Homer

Excited to assemble my upcoming Homer (first Riv!), but Velocity is

get a pair. I'm curious if anyone here might have a wheelset for sale that
would fit.

I plan on using 43mm tires and Paul centerpull brakes, 8sp Shimano
cassette, would need a 135mm rear spacing.
