I use a Wahoo Fitness Tickr X heart rate strap. It is dual band, Ant+ and
bluetooth. I have used it connected simultaneously to both the Wahoo
Fitness app on my iPhone and a Garmin 520. It also has motion sensing
built in and can detect walk/run strides and also workout reps. I haven't
tried it, but I think it can it can work phone-free and store data in
memory with the sync happening later. Of course, that particular feature
would only be for when you did not need an HR read out during the exercise,
if you wanted to go by feel and verify later. My best recommendation: If
I needed to buy a HR strap today, I would buy this one.

For a read out of HR during a ride, I recommend a quad-lock mount on the
bike stem for your phone. My iPhone 5S finally died. I had used it in a
hard plastic case with the generic quad-lock adapter adhered to the back.
I have a new iPhone now and will be doing something similar, getting a
quad-lock hard case to stick it in for use on the bike. On my Homer, I
have the out front mount that put the phone at the front of the bar and
left room on the stem for the Garmin. This let both devices mount centered
on the bar. Now that I have an Atlantis also, I may get the same mount for
it. I like it just a bit further forward for visibility compared with the
stem mount; might get the GoPro adapter for mounting it underneath that
also.
