Re: [RBW] What eye protection do y'all use when riding?

2012-03-25 Thread EricP
Regular glasses or prescription sunglasses. Not a fan of contacts. On
yesterday's foggy ride, had to stop every 5 to 10 miles to wipe off my
glasses to see.

In extreme weather conditions (usually heavy snow or rain) have been known
to just take the glasses off and squint while riding.

2012-03-25 Thread Tom M
Prescription Rec Specs with transition lenses and straps. They'll fog when
I'm stopped at traffic lights, but once I'm moving, that goes away. Decent
eye protection, and with the straps, they should stay on if I crash. I
normally wear bifocals but opted to save a little money and just get the
distance prescription. It doesn't affect me riding, but if I had to read a
cue sheet, it would be a problem.

[RBW] What eye protection do y'all use when riding?

2012-03-24 Thread PATRICK MOORE
You long distance riders: what do you wear, if anything, to protect
your eyes from sun, wind, dust and pollen? I dislike glasses intensely
because I sweat all over them so that in very short order they become
largely opaque -- as even the very well designed -- the frames sit
away from the face -- R Projects got smeared today in 12 miles at 74F,
11% humidity.

I generally just wear a cycling cap for the shade (from wind as well
as sun) and to act as a sweat reservoir, but then I don't ride 100
miles at a stretch. I used to give myself headaches as a lad wearing
heavy glass lenses in slippery, ill fitting, blacl plastic frames when
I tried to hold them on my Asian nose with my face muscles.

Interesting: Armstrong, Indurain -- mostly in shades. Hinault, Merckx,
Anquetil, Coppi, Bartali, Maes, Christophe, Garin -- rarely despite
the much more dirt; ditto 12 time Tour winner Beryl Burton, the best
cyclist in history. What gives -- Rudy P and Bolle sponsorships?

I wear RayBan Aviators. Although I occasionally do get a few spots on
the inside of the lenses, primarily from tearing on extremely windy
days, I typically do not sweat on the lenses even though our notion of a
humid day here in metro DC is often as much as ten times higher than
Patrick's.

And when it comes to pollen -- some days around here, you finish a ride
with a green or yellow skin and need to run the windshield washers
before you can drive home after the ride.
