[RBW] What stem?

2015-12-28 Thread Tim Wood
Thanks everyone for the input. I sent a PM to Keith requesting comparison
photos of the albas and Boscos on the Clem but maybe others would want to see
them, Keith up to you if you want to post them here.

A lot of my desire to do a bar switch is fit related, but some of it has to do
with aesthetics as I don't love the bull moose. I like the look of a level
quill stem versus the positive angle and triangular set up of the bull moose.

I think a tallux stem with an Alba bar would give me the drop and lean I am
looking for, taking in to account the -40mm difference between bars only, and
the further difference between the stem angle of the two styles.

I never really considered the width of the Alba to be a deal breaker, or
concern, and this is the first time I'm hearing about that being an issue. All
other reviews and comments I read about the bars is that people love them and
often never look back once installed. The width of the boscos is pretty extreme
and I can't see wanting to go any wider. As it stands you have to be pretty
focused riding through traffic and on narrow bridge decks or passing others on
paths. I would be happy with a reduction in width.

Sounds like I've made my decision! Sometimes writing out your thoughts is all
you need to do. Thanks for being the sounding board!

[RBW] What stem?

2015-12-28 Thread David Banzer
I'm using a 12cm Tech Delux stem with Albatross bars on my 59cm Clem. This
gives a nice semi-upright position. It's a lot of fun.

[RBW] What stem?

2015-12-27 Thread Tim Wood
In the next couple days I'm putting an order in for some Alba bars and tallux
stem for my Clem. My 59cm Clem has the stock bosco bull moose and I'm looking
for group input on what length stem to buy.

As we know the bosco bullmoose has a 12cm extension and I'm just wondering how
that should translate to an Alba conversion. It seems the Alba extends past the
clamp area at the "humps", in effect, increasing the reach in the forward grip.
This leads me to think I should go for a shorter stem, say 11cm.

I like the current fit and reach on my Clem and if anything I wouldn't mind a
more aggressive position - less rise, more lean, shorter grip.

Does anyone have any personal experience in switching between bosco and
albatross and what conclusions were drawn?

Thanks for your time and input.

Re: [RBW] What stem?

2015-12-27 Thread James Warren
My experience is with the current 62 cm Sam Hillborne. I'm 6'4" but have only
SH of 81 cm so I have a long torso. The SH toptube is pretty long but I'm
unsure of the number. Should be on the Riv site. I set the bike up with
Albatross and just an 11 cm stem, and I angle the handlebar so the ends point
down, and this is all probably the best bar setup I've ever had. Comfortable,
versatile, and I haven't suffered on all-day trips. I get off and move around a
lot on all day trips; I don't pedal against the clock. I can't speak about how
this Albatross would be for long road pedaling sessions, because I don't do
those.

Going with the 11 cm stem went against the typical "go with a longer stem than
on drops advice" because I would probably do 11 cm on this bike with a drop
bar. But I'm guessing I won't find out.

My 64 cm Atlantis has a 62 cm actual top tube so after correction based on its
2.5 degree TT slope, it's effective TT is longer than Hillborne. I tried the
exact same angled albatross with 11 cm stem on the Atlantis, and I have to
reach forward just a bit to much. I'm about to switch to a 10 on that.

Two other notes:
1) Clearing the bar of shifters is great for me. I don't even like them in the
bar ends. This lets me use wide paddle grips (Ergons). The grips and empty bar
both probably factor into why I like this. This is why stem shifters are my
favorite.

2) For the way I exert force on the ends of that bar it's probably best that I
don't use a shim. I use the 25.4 mm clamp Nitto to match the bar.

Here's the Hillborne setup I've enjoyed so much:
