Re: [RBW] Re: DBC 400K 4-17-10 - a set on Flickr

2010-04-23 Thread Ray Shine
Have you tried stretching while on the bike? There are a number of different
stretches to do while still moving along, although the best is still to
dismount every so often and walk 'em out a bit. In the end, I think some
strain and discomfort is inevitable -- at least it is for me -- when pedaling
in that position for 100 miles. Note that I refer to strain, not pain. If it's
painful, then there are other problems that should be addressed.

One other member recently commented that he often raises or lowers h'bars and
fiddles with his seat several times during marathon rides. That sounds smart
to me. Wish I could give credit to the poster, but I forgot who it was, now.

Shorter/higher stem would be a place to look.

You might have someone snap an image of you on the bike from the side, so
you see what you are doing. Sometimes, that can be instructive.

I've found that the yoga I've been doing over the last year is really paying
benefits. Specifically, as I used to tire, my torso would start to hang
slightly from my shoulder joints. It's a bit tricky to explain rather than
show, but you can often notice as your shoulders move up towards your ears.

I'm now noticing this before it really starts, and can shift around a bit,
rely upon the shoulder muscles that the yoga have helped restore, stack my
bones a bit so I'm not relying on the tendons and muscles. That sort of
thing.

Also, a lot of low back pain has to do with core strength issues - i.e.
stomach muscles. Cycling does nothing for your gut, and since the organs are
just kind of hanging there, they pull down, exacerbating the problem. Again,
the yoga has helped me feel when that's starting to occur.

Finally, I'd offer that when you feel the pain, it's too late. You're
better off being very proactive, as Ray said, in getting off the bike,
stretching a bit, walking around, and moving differently before you start to
hurt.

Most of the randonneurs I know who do the longer distances all spent some
time getting comfortable, and more importantly, staying comfortable, at
shorter distances. If you are comfortable, the mileage will take care of
itself.

hope that helps,

My nighttime attitude is anyone can run you down and get away with it.
That's why I don't even own a bike light or one of those godawful reflective

Helping other riders is not normally considered to be personal
support. So, yes, you can hold another rider's bike while they fix a
flat. There's a thread on the randon list right now about the most
memorable repairs riders have helped with on other rider's bikes.

Yeah, I call this turtling, when your shoulders hunch up around your ears and
your neck disappears down into your chest, sometimes with your head hanging,
too. Like a turtle pulling back into his shell. I try to avoid doing this by
focussing on keeping my back straight(ish) and my head up...the old try to
touch the top tube with your belly button, exercise works for me.

Most of my lower back problems were solved by moving my saddle a bit forward
and my bars down a little, FWIW.

Laying a bike on its side really shouldn't damage it.

Most of the time on longer rides, I'll use another's mechanical or natural
break as a time to check my rig, refuel, get food or layers out and make
ready for the next section.

If you are interested in brevets, most clubs usually put on Populaires

2010-04-22 Thread Eric Norris
I've never had trouble with the straps. The new Camelbak I was using last
Saturday has wider straps with light padding, so I think it will work even
better than the older model with unpadded straps.

On hot days, having a bladder full of cold water on my back really helps cool
me down. When it's hot, I start packing the bladder with mostly ice an a little
water so I have an continuous supply of ice water.

That being said, some people just don't like having anything on their back. As
with everything else, YMMV.
