2018-11-19 Thread Bruce Herbitter
The 26” wheel was used to achieve better geometry in smaller size bikes. It is
neutral steering and corners like it’s on rails. Default tire is 32 and takes
fenders. Up to 1 1/2” without fenders. (What I’m using right now). The 1 1/2”
will not pass the brake shoes for removal without letting air out. I got mine
complete from RBW in ‘07. More recently I switched cockpit to an urban set up.
Love it either way. Rode it yesterday on club social ride and kept up just
fine.

I would give my feelings on my 700c Ram but don’t know how different an animal
a 26” wheel Ram is.

Just from looking, there are massive geo frame diffs.

Look at the HT discussed earlier. Look at how far back the rear wheel/tire is
from the ST on the 52. Looks almost like a longboard bike.

But if they do ride like a 700c Ram I would not hesitate to buy if that is what
you want. Other 52 owners can review theirs.

As far as looks - Prettiest Rivbike model ever made. Just look at that head
badge, unique blue paint, traditional frame shape, and pretty fork and lugs.
Awesome decals.

No American soundslikeinsidejoke names. No current “font” typeset looking
decals like current models.

Rams have nice artistic writing and decals that Rivbikes had yesteryear like
Salukis and Bleriots did. Ram Rear drop outs are elegant. Probly the zippiest
Rivbike besides Legolas and Roadeo. I would buy a Ram over ANY Musa/toyo/taiwan
Hilsen anyday. Especially over the longer/stouter/Sam look alike Hilsons of
today.

We have the same inseam. The 52 Ram is a perfect fit. Try 650B in your road.
I did and run 38 mm Soma Express with room and Pari-Moto's with less room.
Both work.

I'm thinking this would be a perfect fit for me, assuming it actually is a 52
cm frame. I'm 5'6", with a 79 cm PBH. I'm a little torn about getting a 26"
bike, but I get why Riv uses smaller wheels for smaller frames.

I'm having a hard time justifying the purchase, because there's a lot of
overlap between the Ram and my current bikes. I have an older Riv road
standard, to cover the lugged steel Rivendell place in the stable. The problem
with that bike is that I can't run tires larger than 28 mm. I got some great
input on using supple tires with that bike, haven't tried that yet. I really
want that spot to be filed with an Albatross barred bike, I don't know if the
road standard will ever be great with those bars. One other issue with that
bike is that it doesn't have any cream details, it's solid light blue. A great
color, but I like the cream fills on the Ram. Then, I have an S coupled
Lynskey Ti all-rounder, that can take up to 42 mm tires. The 3rd road bike in
the garage is a 52 cm, 26" wheeled Surly Disc Trucker, that I only use for
fully loaded touring.

So, I guess I'm looking for input on whether I'd love this bike so much that I
should give it a spot in my stable? It does feel like a good deal, given the
stated condition. I'd have to drive a couple of hours to get it, but I think it
would be worth the trip.

Cheers,
Keith

Whoops, you are talking about a Ram, not an Atlantis; scratch the Rat Trap
Pass. But underline again the Elk Pass. On a 23 mm rim it ought to max out
at 30 mm. But the ride quality is so good that, IMO, you don't need
anything fatter for pavement or firm dirt or gravel (and see BQ photos of
the EPs being ridden off road), particularly if you are of a size and
weight to ride a 52 cm frame. I ride frames up to 60 c-c but my 57 and 58
Rivs are built for 559 wheels, and the Elk Pass is the cherry on top of the
clotted cream on top of the ice cream on top of the cake -- it rides
perfectly under my 175 lb on pavement and firm dirt.

Joe,
That's exactly the way I'm thinking about it. It feels like if I don't buy
it, I don't know when I'll have another chance to own one. I am rather
surprised to see that it likely won't take a tire wider than 33 mm. I
wonder how different it would feel from a new, 650B A. Homer Hilsen? That
would likely be the way I'd go if I were to buy a new Riv.

This page from cyclofiend is a great resource.
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/geometry.html

I ride 56/57cm frames and have no reservations about 26" wheels, but my bike
runs ~50mm wide tires. The Ram you're looking at would only take 33mm according
to the geo sheet. You might gain more by doing a 650b conversion on your
