If you look for it it is noticeable and you know exactly which pair of pants he's wearing. FWIW, my method is simply to cut and add velcro; I leave the pockets on -- they are very useful, especially in winter when one doesn't have access to rear jersey pockets. I favor high rise, pleated, full cut dress trousers for comfort when in the hoods or hooks, of tightly woven gabardine or plain weave wool for wear; so far, except for shininess and saddle smudging, mine show little wear after several seasons. I cut mine long, plus 8, hem and add long velcro because I like them snugged up tight under the knee with a lot of bag. FWIW, mine come out of the washer, Kookabura and delicates wash, hang dry, looking decent. I cut the bottoms off and relocated the adjusty buckles at the waistband to the bottom of the leg. Not mine; my home made knickers get heavy use during the cold months and, so far, except for some shininess there is no sign of wear after three seasons, for two of them. I use top quality wool trousers for conversion. This is atually a topic I've thought about at times. I have some semi-casual pants that I can just barely get away with at work that have a zipper around the mid thigh. I can remove them lower leg and get shorts. The only draw back at work is that they have cargo pockets which look kind of dress down. I generally just wear skin shorts and in cooler weather put leg warmers on over the shorts. I then change in the closet in my office. I wear the wool semi tights as winter tights and they are fine. Especially under a pair of shorts. Joneswares makes (in the USa btw) very good stuff, and they are great people to work with.
