Re: [RBW] Grips on Albatross bars.

2012-12-27 Thread sameness
Agreed on the hard, slippery feel, even glove-free. I resolved the issue by
applying two light coats of shellac, then rubbed 'em down a couple of times
with a rag doused in denatured alcohol. Thinned out the shellac
appreciably, but still sealed 'em up a bit, which yielded a much better
feel than the raw cork. I'd imagine this is how they'd end up in a year's
time with regular wear anyway, so I just accelerated the process. Give it a
try.

2012-12-24 Thread Doug Magney
I have the Ergon Biokork GP1 grips on my Alba-equipped Hunq,
http://www.ergon-bike.com/us/en/product/gp1-biokork# Not exactly
classic-looking, but it has the cork vibe going for it. The grips are very
durable and super comfy for my hands. I never liked the fact that glued-on cork
grips are are a one shot deal that have to be cut off if cockpit changes are
needed.

I like the cork grips but once shellacked they're a bit too slippery with
winter gloves. I use two layers of 'cork' bar tape with a layer of cloth
wrapped tightly over the top to make my own grips.

Hi. I like the feel (and look) of the older Brooks grips, like these:

I can't help but notice, however, that the price seems to have about
doubled from when I bought mine.

On another bike I have wood dia-compe grips, see here

They originally were blond but developed a crack, so when I repaired them
I restrained in a walnut and shellacked them too. Also no,cushioning at
all, but then on my road bikes I get by with just cotton bar tape, nothing
 under neath.

Both the brooks and dia compe grips can slide off and on easily for
 cockpit changes.

I'm not a fan of the mt grips on swept back bars, feels strange to me.

Another vote for cork. I am, however, fairly new to Albas having started
with them only back in October. Still I've logged hundreds of miles
commuting and camping since then and find them to be quite comfortable.

Trade-off is no bar-end shifters, but with Ergons, thumbshifters are very nice.

Re: [RBW] Grips on Albatross bars.

2012-12-23 Thread Colin Bortner
Cork grips for me -- small diameter grips don't feel right with
swept-bar bars. Wrap the front bends with tape if you want the hand
positions (excluding the brake-lever-clamp-between-the fingers,
because the cork and tape are different diameters).
