Re: [RBW] Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-10-29 Thread Steve Palincsar
Something similar happened to me commuting home from work in the early
1980s.  I was commuting on a Raleigh DL-1 roadster then, with my wallet
in a Carradice-clone seat bag.  I'd failed to secure one of the straps,
and when I got home I discovered my wallet was missing.

I backtracked my route from home into the District of Columbia, but
found nothing.  Rode back home disconsolate and worried about all the
hassle of getting new IDs, etc., to learn when I did get home that a
fellow commuter had found my wallet only minutes after I'd dropped it
and since he was passing through my neighborhood on his way home, had
stopped at my house and dropped the wallet off.

I left my saddle bag open once for I don’t know how long. At first I thought

missing. The nice ones that Riv sells. Never found it and was stuck with one
brand new glove. Not a huge financial loss, but still quite Frustrating.

I have found many items on the paths around here: lights, jackets, keys, etc.
If they are bright items and off to the side, I just leave them. If they are in
the path, I pick them up and put them at the nearest entrance, fence post or
wall. Hopefully the person that lost them will come back and have an easy time
finding them.

Once on the road I found a wallet. I could tell it hadn’t been there long.
Opened it up, lots of cash, cards, drivers liscence and business card matching
name on liscence. I called the guy up and said I had his wallet. He didn’t
think so, thought I was scamming him or something. Eventually he came around,
realized it was possible and grew incredibly thankful.

Oh, and on the road over the years, I have found many a tool that has fallen
off the back of trucks. Those I pick up and keep!

Many times I have lost other riders on rides. They usually disappear up ahead
of me, never to be seen again.

Thanks for the support. It drives me nuts because I never lose anything. I'm
compulsively oraganized.

Re: [RBW] Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-10-28 Thread Patrick Moore
I lost my keys on a popular stretch of dirt road, and annoyed a number of
walkers asking them if they had seen my keys. No luck, alas, but I did find
them inside my house when I got home, and entered using a cleverly hidden
spare.

OTOH, the grocery pannier -- old hook and bungee type -- that I lost on or
about the same stretch never did turn up, either on that road or at home. I
assume it either bounced off, or was scraped off when I filtered through
something narrow.

And then there were the several fraught days when I couldn't find my cell
phone; when I dialed it using Google, I could hear it ringing faintly and
elusively and derisively in the distance, but when I dashed upstairs or
downstairs to locate it, it eluded me. I found it on about day 2, lying
outside my front door on the gravel -- good thing we're high desert.
