Of course, there's that Citroen DS that I've always wanted ...

Don't talk to me about your pissant porteurs!

I've often thought of getting one of those cycle trucks. (Ahearne makes a
swell modern version http://www.ahearnecycles.com/cycle-truck-intro/).
That Citroen is quite cool. Believe one even had a bit part in a Maigret
episode.

Currently I am living in an apartment up a couple flights of stairs.
Lugging one of those up and down every day may finally convince the
neighbors that I am not just odd but certainly mad.

Re: [RBW] Re: Going carless?

2015-08-22 Thread Patrick Moore
I hope Catie one day will transfer more interest to bicycles, but while
intrepid in her own way, she's not a physical activity focused person,
her interests being drawing and painting, music choral and instrumental,
and cooking. I started with high hopes and expensive rides -- at 2 she had
an $80 trike with (odd) freewheel, pneumatic tires, and remote, removable,
parent-steering, and graduated through a couple of small-kid Goodwill bikes
to rather expensive cruisers, until she lost interest at about age 12 (Dad,
I'm embarrassed to ride it, it's *pink!*). We did have some good times with
a child trailer pulled by a 67 fixed gear, but when it came to a Burley
trail-a-bike, she refused to cooperate.

As to the car, while she was away this summer -- she spent most of the
summer at various camps and stays out of town -- the car sat in the garage
undriven. But starting next week, I have to drive her 2Xweek 30 miles rt to
skating and, of course, there's picking her up from and dropping her off at
her mothers, taking her to church, dates with friends, shopping (Target
this morning, drat), and so forth. And Albuquerque, while bicycle friendly,
is typically sprawled out SW style.

If it were just me, there's Enterprise, the ever improving bus system; and
Home Depot rents pickups by the hour. I have a Dahon Hon Solo due to arrive
before too long, and I'd seriously consider some sort of transport bike,
perhaps with an electric assist; tho' 3/5 of my shopping can be done with
road bikes and racks, and 3/5 of the rest by Amazon and other online
purveyors. And before the end of the year, God willing, I should have 2
customs with rear and (at need) front racks -- the '03 and what I hope will
be a Matthews road bike for dirt. *And* our weather lets us ride just
about year 'round.

The cost of the PTC is largely sunk now, please God, and roughly 1600/year
in operating costs is rather less than I end up spending on bikes, so

But I *do* like those Ahearns!

These bikes look so cool and I am jealous of anyone that can go carless.
I dream of a day when a car is a rarity for me. But right now we live in
(a beautiful wonderful small) community where you pretty much have to drive
about 25 miles, starting through a mountain pass, to get anywhere. And I
know I am lying to myself a little here. We can't dump the car, but we
could ride bike daily to the store to pick up groceries. Sure, the
groceries cost more, but that's the price of good entertainment, right?
AND that's great justification for adding racks and nice bags to my bike
because then I will truly need them. I will start making that a priority,
at least until the weather makes it not a good idea for me. And if I make
it until the weather turns, maybe I'll figure that one out a little better
but for now me on icy hilly roads don't seem like a good idea.

Of course, what struck me immediately in Patrick's posting was think how
many cool bikes they could have if they would both go carless I realize
that may not be practical, just like it isn't for me right now. But I'll
bet Patrick's daughter will follow in his footsteps and look at her car
some day and think how can I get rid of this?
